In a blog post, Jordan Mechner wrote about how this kind of project cancellation can often be a "brutal experience" for developers.
The press kit included a full-sized replica of the Dagger of Time from the cancelled remake, indicating that it was close to release.
The developer said that they unfortunately couldn't verify their identity in a Q&A session due to non-disclosure agreements.

"We didn't want to release something that fell short of what The Sands of Time represents," it said after the remake's cancellation.
A new decentralized operating model that splits its developers into five Creative Houses has been announced alongside other big changes.
Along with this, reports also indicate that Ubisoft is aiming to release its remake of Splinter Cell in the second half of 2026.
Unannounced projects such as Project Alterra and WW2 extraction shooter Project Crest are also reportedly targeting the same.
The remake is "being crafted by a team that truly cares, and they're pouring their hearts (and a lot of coffee) into every step."
Ubisoft's fiscal year 2025 forecast currently includes the remake, Rainbow Six Mobile, The Division Resurgence, and Anno 117: Pax Romana.
Ubisoft says work on remakes of Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time will remain unaffected.
"We really want to revamp her as a great character, even if she's not playable," says creative director Bio Jade Adam Granger.
However, the original also has "moments that need to be preserved visually and pacing-wise", the developers say.
The long-in-development remake reappeared at the recent Ubisoft Forward with a brief teaser trailer.
The remake's development was rebooted by Ubisoft Montreal – the studio that developed the original – a little over two years ago.
The remake allegedly rebooted development after changing studios, and will now also feature new combat and parkour mechanics, it's been claimed.
Development on the project was handed over to Ubisoft Montreal in May of last year.
Producer Jean-Francois Naud and game director Michael McIntyre reveal that the project is currently in the conception stage.
The company reiterates that the remake is in development at Ubisoft Montreal, but it still doesn't have a release date.
Shortly after delisting the game across multiple retailer sites, Ubisoft has confirmed the delay via an official statement.
