Everything to do with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has been kind of a disaster. Announced back in 2020 with a January 2021 launch window, the game was criticized widely upon its reveal for the poor state of its visuals and production value. Over the coming months, it was delayed more than a few times, before finally, in May of 2022, it was announced that the title’s development had been moved from Ubisoft’s studios in Pune and Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal, the studio that developed the original 2003 title.
Since then, updates on the game have completely dried up, but contrary to what some might be fearing, the project hasn’t been cancelled. In an update, Ubisoft has provided assurances that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake hasn’t been cancelled, and that it’s still in development at Ubisoft Montreal. It’s a sad state of affairs that this kind of an update is even needed, yes, but at least Ubisoft hasn’t forgotten the game exists.
Ubisoft says there’s still nothing to be shared where the game’s release date is concerned, and that that information will be shared in “future updates”, which is about as vague as things can get. Interestingly, the company also says that “there are currently no plans to remake any other Prince of Persia title.”
Unsurprisingly, Ubisoft confirmed earlier this year that following the change in development studios, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake was no longer targeting a release in fiscal year 2023 (before April 2023).
Interestingly previous leaks have claimed that the remake isn’t the only new Prince of Persia title in development a Ubisoft, with with Rayman Origins and Legends studio Ubisoft Montpellier allegedly also working on a 2.5D Prince of Persia sidescroller inspired by the Ori games.
