For the first time in years, Sony has shared a sales update for the PlayStation 3. In yesterday’s financial report, where we learned about the PS4’s fantastic market performance, Sony also shared updated shipment numbers for their previous console.
According to Sony, the PS3 was at 87.4 million units shipped, as of March 31, 2017, which is a respectable place for it to have ended (though it squarely places it as the worst performing PlayStation console, given all of the others breached 90 million units).
Far more impressive is the performance of PS3 software—according to Sony, PS3 sold roughly a billion games over its life, which means the attach rate was about 11 games sold per console. That actually means it has the highest attach rate of any PlayStation console, though PS4 may well overtake it by the time all is said and done.
Now all we have to do is hope that one day, Sony randomly shares a sales update for the PS Vita as well—it remains the only system to not have received a sales update from Sony.
