The NPD Group’s March 2021 report for consumer spending on video games in the US is in and hardware sales continue to grow year-on-year. Dollar sales for gaming hardware were 47 percent higher compared to March last year and set a new record for the month at $680 million. In terms of unit and dollar sales for March, the Nintendo Switch topped the charts.
However, for the entire quarter, the Switch leads the charts in unit sales while the PS5 tops dollar sales. It was also revealed that the PS5 is the fastest selling console in US history in terms of unit and dollar sales. This despite the fact that it’s only been on the market for five months.
Sony revealed in February that 4.5 million PS5 units had shipped last year (with the console launching in mid-November). It forecast 7.6 million units shipped by the end of the fiscal year but it may end up beating that. Stay tuned for more details and updates in the meantime.
