PS5 Reaches 95.3 Million Lifetime Shipments

Software sales remained essentially flat year-over-year as "restructuring" and investments in next-gen result in higher costs for Sony.

Sony’s latest financial results are in for the quarter ending June 30th, 2026, and the PS5 shipped 1.6 million units in that period. Lifetime shipments reached 95.3 million worldwide, but dropped year over year by 900,000.

Other notable statistics include 66.1 million software sales across the PS5 and PS4, up slightly by 200,000. First-party sales were down by 190,000, hitting six million compared to last year. As usual, full software digital downloads continue to dominate, comprising 82 percent of sales, down by one percent year-over-year.

Following the company’s recent announcement regarding physical disc production for new games post-January 2028, you have to wonder what the effect will be on physical sales. In the meantime, PlayStation Network monthly active users steadily rose in the quarter, reaching 125 million.

Interestingly, operating income rose by 37 percent, following refunds after US tariffs were found to be illegal and exchange rates. However, rising costs due to “restructuring” and next-gen investments proved to be a negative. It hasn’t provided any more details for the rumored PlayStation 6, with recent claims putting its Bill of Materials at almost $1,000.

However, you would think it would get the ball rolling sooner rather than later, especially if the console is to meet its alleged Holiday 2027 launch window. Stay tuned for updates, as always.
