"Trade wars" and memory shortages are hitting the company hard, with Hiroki Totoki noting, "We need to take some action."

Remember when Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said the company hadn’t yet decided what the PlayStation 6 would cost or even when it might launch? All rumors and reports to the contrary about either (or both) aside, it seems that’s still the case.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Totoki confirmed that the release date for the company’s next-gen console remains undecided. The reasons, from memory shortages to “trade wars” (with the Japanese Yen currently considered weak), are what you would expect. “Considering that importance, we need to take some action. Otherwise, we cannot survive in this landscape.”

Last April, leaker KeplerL2 claimed that Sony wouldn’t delay the console past 2027, especially since AMD had apparently begun hardware validation (so why would it waste resources?). That said, memory prices have only increased since then, mostly due to AI, and it’s long since affected SSDs. Even motherboards are expected to increase in price before long.

Sony confirmed it has memory reserves for the rest of the year, quelling concerns about a shortage of consoles ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6’s launch this November. But that’s only for the PlayStation 5 – its plans for the next generation remain up in the air. What “action” Totoki and company will take remains to be seen, but for now, it wouldn’t be surprising if the PS6 somehow slipped into 2028 (or further beyond).
