#7. 2013
Historically, console launches haven’t always been as perfect as we’d like to think. It usually takes a while for new consoles to get into the rhythm of things, and the PS4 and Xbox One certainly didn’t start off strong. That’s not to say their launch lineups were lacking in big names. The PS4 had games such as Resogun, Killzone Shadow Fall, and the one and only Knack in its launch lineup, and the Xbox One had the likes of Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct, Forza Motorsport 5 – but none of these really took our breath away.
Games such as Call of Duty: Ghosts, Need for Speed: Rivals, Battlefield 4, and Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag bolstered both consoles’ libraries as well, but these were all cross-gen releases, and as such, far from ringing endorsements for the future of video games. The fact that seventh-gen titles such as The Last of Us and Grand Theft Auto 5 were the best games of 2013 should tell you all you need to know about the debut year of the PS4 and Xbox One.
