#5. 2019
2019 came hot on the heels of two consecutive excellent years, possibly among the greatest years this industry has ever seen. Following the flurry of excellent releases we saw in that period, in 2019, the entire industry collectively stopped to take a breath and slowed its pace. But though 2019 wasn’t as chock full of generation defining titles as some other years have been, it was still no slouch. It gave us games such as Resident Evil 2, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, all of which instantly became all-time greats in the eyes of many.
On top of that, other great games like Mortal Kombat 11, Judgment, The Division 2, Borderlands 3, Gears 5, Death Stranding, Super Mario Maker 2, and Astral Chain populated the year as well. There was more than enough to keep us busy throughout the year, from beginning to end- enough that 2019’s relatively more relaxed nature did not feel like a letdown after the years it was following.
