Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart’s PC Port Struggles to Run on a PS4 HDD After All

As per a recent Digital Foundry report, true to Insomniac's word, the action-platformer really does struggle to run well on a PS4 HDD.

When it was announced that Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart’s PC port would not need an SSD on minimum settings, plenty of reminders were issued about how developer Insomniac Games touted the PS5’s SSD in the lead-up to the game’s original launch, and claimed that it had been designed specifically with that hardware in mind. As it turns out, however, Rift Apart might have been unlikely to be able to run properly (if at all) on a PS4 after all.

Digital Foundry recently published its technical analysis of Rift Apart’s PC port, which was developed by Nixxes Software, in which it tried running the game on a PC meeting the game’s minimum requirements, but hooked up to a PS4 HDD. The results were far from impressive- though the game is able to run, it stutters like nobody’s business, and a single dimensional transition – which should take a couple of seconds at most – takes well over a minute at best. Check out the clip below.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart’s PC port is now available. The game is also fully optimized for the Steam Deck.
