The Chelonian cult members are infamous for jumping off of the Cumberland Forest hill in the Epilogue (with John capable of fervently joining them). However, when visiting the same hill initially as Arthur to persuade Jamie to leave the cult, you actually have the option to shoot the cult members before giving chase. This doesn’t immediately fail the mission but, once a single cult member dies, the rest leap off of the cliff, much like they would in Epilogue. Then you fail the mission because of course you do.
