Rockstar tried something brave and bold with Grand Theft Auto V with the multiple protagonists approach, and it paid off. But if you’re hoping they’ve secretly got something similar in place for Red Dead Redemption 2 where you will maybe be allowed to play as John Marston again and switch between him and protagonist Arthur Morgan on the fly- well, you shouldn’t.
According to Red Dead Redemption 2’s art director Josh Bass, that’s not going to be the case. The game is going to be focused entirely on Arthur Morgan. “Sticking with a single character felt more appropriate for the structure and narrative of a western,” Bass said while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter. “Arthur lives with and fights alongside the other members of the Van der Linde gang, and they are a group of fully realized characters with relationships to each other and to Arthur, but this is Arthur’s story and we are placing players firmly in Arthur’s boots as he and the gang deal with a rapidly changing world. We think people will really love the feeling of being in the gang. It isn’t like anything we’ve done before.”
That group of fully realized characters definitely seems to be a pretty huge focus in Red Dead Redemption 2. Recently, Rockstar released details on over twenty characters from the game, which, of course, includes the likes of John Marston, Arthur Morgan, Dutch van der Linde, and a whole host of newcomers. Red Dead Redemption 2 launches for the PS4 and Xbox One on October 26. Some interesting details were recently shared by Rockstar on the game’s story. Read about it here.
