Resident Evil 7 looks to be a reboot of the series of sorts- but that may end up being more true than you’d think. According to details about the game published in Hobby Consolas, which is a Spanish gaming magazine (and translated most kindly by JJShadow on NeoGAF, who does disclaim that their translation may just be a little spotty), the game is going to end up following an altogether different direction than the rest of the series.
The game basically sees to be an outright riff on Silent Hill, featuring a main character who goes to a town to search for his missing wife. The game itself has become more psychological horror than a game focused on zombies, as previous games in the series have been. This is mechanically evident in the kinds of enemies you face off in the game, including a new enemy type known as Holoforms- a name that might be more telling than we think. Boss fights will also be diverse and different this time around- one of them, it seems like, involves driving a car.
The game itself is focused more on exploration than other games in the series, has limited inventory slots, manual saving, limited ammo, and what might be a kind of insectoid enemy. In other words, it sounds like the perfect horror game that Resident Evil always should have been, rather than the increasingly misguided action game focus the series has had of late.
Resident Evil 7 is due to launch on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in January 2017.
