Star Wars - Respawn

Respawn Entertainment is currently fully focused on the looming launch of the highly anticipated Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, but the developer has a couple other Star Wars projects in the works as well. Last year, it was confirmed the the studio was also working on a narrative-driven first person shooter in the Star Wars universe, in addition to having partnered with Bit Reactor for a strategy game. Now, newly published job listings (spotted by Exputer) may have revealed some details on the former.

As per multiple job listings – including for the positions of Cinematic Lead, Senior Character Artist, Lead Mission Designer, and Lead Lighting Artist – Respawn’s Star Wars FPS will take inspiration from a couple of classic Star Wars shooters- namely, 1995’s Star Wars: Dark Forces, and its 1997 sequel Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2. You can check out a screencap of one of the listings below.

Interestingly, the job listings also mention that the game will be built on Unreal Engine 5, and, more crucially, that it will be a single player experience. Past job ads had suggested that the game could feature multiplayer elements.

“In collaboration with Lucasfilm, the Star Wars FPS Team is developing a new AAA FPS in the Star Wars galaxy,” the job ads read. “Inspired by classic titles like Dark Forces and Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, our story-driven single player game is being developed from the ground up leveraging the power of Unreal Engine 5. We’re combining this inspiration and technology with Respawn’s pedigree for making best-in-class shooters to deliver a brand new experience our players will love.”

What exactly it means for Respawn’s new FPS to be inspired by the Dark Forces games remains to be seen. The original Dark Forces was a DOOM-inspired shooter and featured various weapons, items, and power ups for players to use, while its sequel, Jedi Knight, saw players playing as a Jedi who could also use a lightsaber and Force abilities. Meanwhile, both games also featured various puzzles and platforming mechanics.

Of course, given the fact that Respawn’s FPS is likely in the early stages of production right now, it’s unlikely that we’ll be getting any concrete details on it anytime soon.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, meanwhile, is due out on April 28 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
