With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing people to stay indoors, the games industry has seen a significant boost in revenue. Nintendo has seen a number of big successes in this period including Animal Crossing: New Horizons but perhaps most interesting is Ring Fit Adventure. Though essentially a role-playing game, it’s all centered around exercise thanks to the Ring-Con and Leg Strap accessories which track the player’s movement and vitals.
Ring Fit Adventure has sold over ten million units worldwide as of March 2021, becoming one of the biggest successes on the Switch. So what’s next? Will there be a sequel at some point? Nintendo president and representative director Shuntaro Furukawa was posed this question during a recent shareholder Q&A. Furukawa noted that console’s strong demand in Japan and overseas along with Asia. “With regard to future developments, I cannot disclose specific plans, but we would like to take various initiatives so many people continue to play this title.”
In March 2020, a free update was released which brought a new rhythm game mode to the title. Whether Nintendo is planning new content or even more updates remains to be seen but not wanting to reveal “specific plans” could mean something bigger in the works. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.
