After a Reddit user discovered assets for a new crate system that’s coming to Psyonix’s Rocket League, the developer confirmed that such a system is indeed coming and sought to clarify a few things with players.

Psyonix vice president Jeremy Dunham noted that, “Those assets are, indeed, early pieces of an upcoming system we plan on implementing to fund our esports prize pools and events. We plan on officially announcing it next month at (or near) the [Rocket League Championship Series] Live Finals since it directly relates to that event and other events like it, but since this image came out before our official word, we wanted to clarify some things for you.”

Of course, the items in said crates are cosmetic and the system can be hidden if players choose so. Items will still drop normally as per the current system and players can still look forward to free content like new arenas and modes in coming updates. How the system will work and whether players will need to purchase keys with real money hasn’t been clarified yet.

That being said, these crates can’t be sold through Steam. “We are definitely aware of the problems related to third-party gambling in other games and we are not interested in taking that approach.”
