Developer Bloober Team has spoken about the development of Silent Hill 2, as well as one of the game’s most iconic levels: the Labyrinth. At Game Developer’s Conference 2025, senior level designer Anna Oporska-Szybisz spoke about the research that went into developing the Labyrinth for the remake of Silent Hill 2.

According to GamesRadar, Oporska-Szybisz and her team had to go through quite a few fan theories about the Labyrinth and its role in the original PS2 release of Silent Hill 2 in order bring the remake version of the level to life. This is especially notable because the circumstances surrounding the Labyrinth were left quite vague in the original game, leaving it up to fans of the seminal horror title to come up with their own theories about it.

“I can’t tell you how many hours we spent watching, reading, discussing all the elements that we can [find] on the internet,” Oporska-Szybisz said. “Our main goal has always been to respect the fans and never, ever disregard any of their theories.”

“I don’t like everything that I found there, to be honest, but when we started analyzing them and finding all the cons and pros behind them, I started to love the way that people were thinking about the Labyrinth, and wanted to incorporate as many things as I can in it.”

Earlier this week at GDC 2025, creative director Mateusz Lenart also spoke about bringing the classic horror game to a new audience, complete with more modern visuals and other features like a new control scheme. Lenart spoke about wanting to bring memories of Silent Hill 2 back for the fans without making a 1:1 remake of the original.

“From the beginning, we knew that the story of this game is the most important aspect of it, and we didn’t want to change it too much,” said Lenart. “At the same time, it was clear that it would be hard to present this story in the modern era without changes in mechanics or combat.”

One of the major new features in the Silent Hill 2 remake is the new over-the-shoulder camera. The original game made use of fixed camera angles, with only some spots around the town having a more traditional third-person camera angle. At the time, this decision was done for technical considerations because of the PS2’s hardware capabilities, as well as to raise the tension for players.

“One of our first decisions was to change the camera to a regular over-the-shoulder third-person perspective,” he continued, saying that “we knew that with that change, we would lose a certain style from the original game.”

The remake of Silent Hill 2 was released on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S back in October 2024. You can check out more details in our review. Konami has also praised Silent Hill 2‘s commercial performance, with reports of increased sales and operating profits since the horror game’s release.
