As part of the collaboration efforts between Koei Tecmo and Konami for their Japanese-themed horror games, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake and Silent Hill f, respectively, the latter has now gotten a free update bringing with it cosmetics from the former. Players can now pick the Crimson Butterfly costume option in Silent Hill f to make protagonist Hinako look like Fatal Frame 2 protagonist Mio Amakura.
Players can access the new costume through an in-game Hokara, where a Change Costume button is available. It is available to all Silent Hill f players for free, as long as their game has been updated to 1.20 or later. Celebrating the release of the costume is a new trailer that shows off how Hinako looks as she makes her way through the dangerous streets of Ebisugaoka. Check it out below.
A similar set of costumes was released for free for Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake back in February, giving players access to Hinako’s Navy Sailor School Uniform and Fox Mask that can then be equipped on Mio and Mayu Akamura. It is worth keeping in mind that these are simply cosmetic outfit choices and have no effect on gameplay.
Silent Hill f tells the story of young schoolgirl Shimizu Hinako, who faces plenty of issues at home thanks to the expectations of Japanese society as well as her abusive father. The title is set in the 1960s, and one day, after getting into a fight with her parents, Hinako heads into town to hang out with her friends. Unfortunately, however, this hangout session turns into a nightmare, with Ebisugaoka getting engulfed in a strange fog and spider lilies blooming everywhere. If things weren’t bad enough, strange monsters also pop up and start prowling around town.
Silent Hill f was released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 25th. The title was the first mainline entry in the franchise since 2012’s Silent Hill: Downpour. Konami has confirmed that the title has been quite successful, and as of April 22nd, has sold more than 2 million copies.
Lead level designer Kaiyu Chang had previously spoken about the challenges in bringing the town of Ebisugaoka to life. She spoke about the story resonating with her quite strongly thanks to its core themes about the constraints that women face in society.
“I first read the initial draft of the script a few years ago,” she said. “At the time, I was pregnant, which made the story’s depiction of the expectations and constraints placed on women by traditional society resonate with me even more deeply. Many scenes struck a strong emotional chord.”
For more details about Silent Hill f, take a look at our review, where we gave it a score of 9 out of 10 thanks to its exceptional atmosphere, sound design, visuals, and execution of psychological horror. The only real complaints we had about the title were the fact that its combat system was too simplistic, and some of its combat animations were quite strange.
