Since the PS5’s launch, while the new console has seen some exclusives with the likes of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Demon’s Souls, and Returnal, the vast majority of first party titles released by PlayStation have been cross-gen, with major titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Gran Turismo 7, and Horizon Forbidden West launching for PS4 as well.
In Sony’s current slate, no upcoming title is confirmed to be cross-gen beyond God of War Ragnarok, which is launching next month- but that could change. Speaking in an interview with Axios, PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst said that Sony doesn’t want to leave the PS4’s massive userbase behind, and might still continue to release games for it, which is something that’ll be decided on a case-by-case basis.
“We certainly don’t want to forget the millions of active players on PS4, and we want to ensure there are great games for them as well,” he said. “We’re evaluating it on a case-by-case basis.”
Of course, beyond God of War Ragnarok, not a great many first party PlayStation titles have been officially announced so far, but the likes of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Wolverine are both currently set to launch only for PS5. Previous titles like Gran Turismo 7 and God of War Ragnarok were also originally announced as current-gen exclusives though, so there’s every chance that Sony ends up making similar changes to launch plans for future titles as well.
