Sony: PS4 “Will Cater to Core Gamers First”, Won’t Supersede PS3 This Year

Also, this year billed as "the best ever year for the PS3".

We’re not mad – honestly – but after the reveal of the PlayStation 4 by Sony on February 20th, it’s beginning to look like a rehash of their PS3 strategy.

Talking to Pocket-Lint, UK and Ireland MD for Sony Computer Entertainment Fergal Gara stated that the PS4 will be for core games first. “If you look at the history of consoles they always start with the core gamers. The first people to buy it will be core gamers and we plan to cater for them very well. We are building the best gaming machine we could build.”

But it can do other things like motion controls and family entertainment. Just like the PS3 – and we know how popular those turned out to be compared to Wii and Kinect.

Of course, we also get the typical “best ever year for the PS3 this year,” line as Gara says “it’s wrong to say that the PS3 is now rubbish because a new console has come along. We’ve got some really strong titles still due this year, including Last of Us and Beyond.”

Time till tell on the PS4 issue, as always.
