Spider-Man Is The First Game Ever To Be Given Permission To Use Marvel’s Iconic Flipbook Logo

The Marvel flipbook logo has become an iconic thing in the last decade and a half. Whether it’s Sony’s individual Spider-Man films, or Fox’s X-Men universe, or, of course, the Marvel Cinematic Universe itself, these movies are all accompanied by Marvel’s own “seal of approval”. The Insomniac developed Spider-Man game comes with that too, and it’s actually the first video game ever to have that.

That’s because Marvel were so impressed with the game’s quality and level of polish, they decided to give Insomniac permission to have that in their game. “You may have noticed that our most recent trailers feature the Marvel flipbook logo at the beginning,” said Insomniac’s community director James Stevenson while speaking with Fandom. “It’s the first time ever that a Marvel video game has been given permission to use that logo. When you see that Marvel flipbook, it’s like a seal of quality. That’s when you kind of get the chills and think, ‘this is a Marvel experience. This is a blockbuster experience.’”

“When we showed the game at E3 this year, the response we got from the Marvel guys was funny,” he continued. “The main person in New York who looks after all the video stuff for Marvel said, ‘I don’t even like video games, but that was f***ing awesome! I’m going to have to get a PS4 so I can play this.’ That was the first time we realised that even the people in Marvel were thinking, ‘wow, this is something special.’

“But it wasn’t until right at the end that Marvel was like, ‘ok, the level of polish and presentation is good enough for our seal of approval.’ So I think they are happy with it. I’m sure not just Marvel Games, but Marvel as a whole are excited about our Spider-Man game. Hopefully they will get behind it in a big way.”

Marvel definitely do seem to be very confident about the game. Recently, for instance, it was announced that Insomniac’s Spider-Man would become part of the Marvel canon, which is obviously huge news. And it’s not just limited to Spider-Man either- Marvel have been making a push to have more of a major presence in games recently, as the upcoming Avengers game by Square Enix makes abundantly clear as well.

Spider-Man is out now for the PS4. Read our review here.
