Splatoon Debuts in Japan With 144,818 Units Sold

Nintendo's new IP debuts big in Japan, boosting sales of the Wii U.

Nintendo’s new team-based shooter Splatoon has released in Japan and according to the latest Media Create charts, it’s fared pretty well in its opening week. The Wii U exclusive sold 144,818 units and actually helped propel sales of the console significantly. The Wii U sold 17,713 units in the past week compared 7,611 units the week prior, making it the top selling console in Japan at this point.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt still sees decent sales on the PS4 with 22,454 units sold this week and 89,839 units over its lifetime. Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX saw better sales on the 3DS with 41,442 sold in its opening week. Meanwhile, Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition still managed to hang on in the top 5 with 12,449 units sold this week and 179,625 units over its lifetime. Then there’s Mario Kart 8, selling 11,654 units this week and 1,006,719 units over its lifetime.
