Star Citizen Funding Now Crosses $49 Million

This is insane.

Star Citizen’s crowd funding seems to be showing absolutely no signs of stopping- its total funding just crossed $49 million, just three weeks after it crossed $48 million. I also need to be clear, this amount comes purely from crowdfunding- people have collectively given Chris Roberts and Cloud Imperium $49 million because they believe in their vision for Star Citizen.

Another thing to keep in mind- a $49 million budget is insane. AAA third party big name games don’t often have that kind of budget purely for game development. Chris Roberts here is creating history with Star Citizen, and in more ways than one.

Now that the game has reached this funding milestone,  Star Citizen backers will receive a virtual Xi’An Space Plant, which Roberts describes as being similar to a bonsai tree.

Star Citizen is due out exclusively for the PC in 2015; Chris Roberts and Cloud Imperium have repeatedly stated that the game will never be dumbed down for consoles, meaning it won’t be coming to either of them, at least not in its present form. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage. We’ll probably be telling you that the game reached $50 million in funding in a few weeks.
