Undead Labs has announced that State of Decay 2’s next update will be the last. The sandbox zombie survival title launched in 2018 and has received consistent post-launch support. As for why it’s moving on, the developer revealed that it’s shifting its “focus and resources” to develop State of Decay 3.
“While you’ve enjoyed State of Decay 2 for many years, you may have heard that we are also hard at work on the next evolution of the franchise! Our ambition is to make the greatest zombie survival sim in the franchise. To do so, we’ll be shifting our focus and resources to making the upcoming third installment, State of Decay 3.”
The final content update, Update 38, is out later this year. Alongside quality-of-life improvements and fixes for “longstanding issues,” it will make seasonal and time-gate content available for all players. State of Decay 2 will remain playable for all owners with save files intact.
However, the developer will no longer accept bug reports after the update drops. Xbox Support will remain open, and “at least one” more hotfix will launch afterwards, potentially to address any issues that could arise from the update.
As for the sequel, Undead Labs will “have more information to share” regarding the title and its release “at a later time.” State of Decay 3 is currently in the works for Xbox Series X/S and PC, with an alleged launch in 2025. Stay tuned for more updates in the meantime.
