Nintendo has announced during today’s Apple event that Mario will be making his debut on iOS with the upcoming Super Mario Run. This autorunner, where Mario moves left to right automatically, will release in Holiday 2016.

Creator Shigeru Miyamoto stated that, “For the past 30 years every time Mario has encountered new platform he has evolved and continued running towards a new goal. Now Mario is running towards his next goal: iPhone. We want as many people as possible to be able to enjoy playing as Mario and they’ll be doing it in a brand new game: Super Mario Run.”

Super Mario Run will have three modes in total. Along with jumping past obstacles, gathering coins and power-ups and reaching the goal quickly, one of these is a Battle Mode called Toad Rally where you compete for high scores against your friends to collect coins in the time allocated. For the third mode, you can use the coins collected to create a Mushroom Kingdom of your own. And don’t worry – there are no micro-transactions.

It’s possible that Super Mario Run comes to Android later since Apple head Tim Cook indicated that it will be on iOS “first”. Stay tuned for more information on the game in the coming months.
