In March of 2021, Danish multimedia entertainment company acquired a 30.7% stake in Supermassive Games, the developer of Until Dawn, The Quarry, and The Dark Pictures Anthology. Now, the partnership between the two companies has been strengthened further. It has been announced that Supermassive has been fully acquired by Nordisk Games, with the latter acquiring 100% ownership in the studio.

“It’s been a little over a year since Nordisk Games made an initial investment in Supermassive Games and our vision for the future,” said Pete Samuels, CEO of Supermassive Games. “During that time, we have found that we share a lot of important values with Mikkel and his team, and we believe these values to be equally important to our existing commercial partners who we will continue to support. Having had such a positive experience over the past year it wasn’t a difficult decision when Nordisk Games wanted to explore increasing their investment. We have an exciting and ambitious growth strategy for Supermassive Games and Nordisk Games ownership only enhances that. I’m hugely excited about where the security offered by this partnership, and continued access to the expertise within Nordisk Games, will take us next.”

“In the year we’ve worked alongside Pete and Joe [Samuels, co-founder] and the whole Supermassive team, it’s been clear to us the amount of talent, as well as how much potential there is to further develop the kinds of story and narrative-driven games they excel at,” said Mikkel Weider, CEO of Nordisk Games. “In acquiring 100% of the studio we’ll be able to increase our support to the team, and most importantly, continue the great working relationship we have with them.”

Supermassive Games becomes Nordisk Games’ third wholly owned studio. The multimedia conglomerate also owns the Avalanche Studios Group (Just Cause) and also has an ownership stake in Spanish studio MercurySteam (Metroid Dread), among others.

Last month, Supermassive Games launched The Quarry in partnership with publisher 2K Games, while later this year, it’ll be releasing The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me with Bandai Namco.

Supermassive Games entered into a partnership with Google for the development of a Stadia exclusive in in July 2020, but as a recent report revealed, that agreement ended up falling through, with the game in question being The Quarrywhich moved under the 2K banner and launched as a PC and consoles multiplatform title.

A job ad in 2020 suggested that Supermassive was working on an unannounced game with “varied and compelling real-time combat”, while more listings a few months later suggested the studio had a multiplayer game in the works. Whether both projects are one and the same remains to be seen, with the game in question still unannounced as of yet.
