Starting with Alan Wake 2 in 2023, Remedy Entertainment plans to release a new game ever year, on top of "additional free and paid content."

Remedy Entertainment rarely ever misses with its games, but while the pace at which the developer puts out new titles hasn’t always matched the impressive quality of each new release, it looks like the studio wants that to change going forward.

In Remedy’s recently published fiscal report for 2022, CEO Tero Virtala said that starting this year, the developer plans to release one new game ever year for the foreseeable future, on top of “additional free and paid content” for released titles.

“Our roadmap for the medium term is now set, and our full focus is on executing the projects in the current games pipeline,” Virtala wrote. “The investments in our teams, Northlight game engine and tool set, support functions and external development are the key enablers for our next growth leap during the coming years. We are planning to launch a new game per year starting from 2023, accompanied by additional free and paid content.”

Remedy has a number of projects confirmed to be in development right now. Of those, Alan Wake 2 – the studio’s first ever survival horror game – will be the first to launch, with a release scheduled for sometime this year. The developer has also confirmed that Alan Wake 2 is now playable from start to finish and will soon be content-complete.

In addition to Alan Wake 2, Remedy Entertainment is also working on a free-to-play multiplayer shooter codenamed Vanguard, as well a standalone multiplayer spinoff of Control. A full-fledged single player Control sequel is also in development, while a remake of Max Payne 1 and 2 is also in the works.

Codename Condor is a spin-off of the Control series, while Heron is a "bigger budget" Control title. Vanguard is a F2P title developed with Tencent.

Along with a development update on Alan Wake 2 in its latest Business Review report, Remedy Entertainment also spoke about other titles like Codename Condor, Codename Heron, and Vanguard.

Codename Condor is a PvE multiplayer spin-off to Control, in development for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. It’s being developed on the Northlight Engine and will support four-player co-op. Its status remains unchanged from the Q1 2022 Business Review, however, and is currently still in the “proof-of-concept” stage.

“We are giving the team time to work on a multitude of important game design elements and finalize the key pillars before moving the project to the next development phase,” said Remedy CEO Tero Virtala.

Codename Heron, the “bigger budget” Control game, is also still in the concept stage. Virtala noted, “Based on the well-progressing early development, the team size has been gradually increased. We will keep the team moderate in size for now and provide the time needed to continue the concept and prototype work for the game, as well as to develop selected technologies and tools in collaboration with our Northlight team. ”

Finally, there’s Vanguard, a free-to-play co-op multiplayer title that’s being developed with Tencent. It uses Unreal Engine, is Remedy’s first live-service title, and remains in the “proof-of-concept’ phase. The development team also won’t expand until next year.

“Vanguard will be an expansive service-based F2P game with a rich world and selected new elements, making it a game that stands out from other multiplayer games. We want to make sure all these elements merge in the right way before we make final decisions on the plans for the next development phase in 2023. At the moment, many of the game’s designs are taking shape, and the team is busy prototyping and testing these.”

This lines up with the studio’s internal delay of the title to “design, prepare and test key elements” before assigning a larger team.

In the meantime, Alan Wake 2 is launching in 2023 for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. It’s expected to appear at this year’s The Game Awards. Remedy is also working with Rockstar Games on Max Payne 1 and 2 Remake for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. This remains in the concept development stage with no confirmed release window.

"We have decided to keep the game codenamed Vanguard longer in the current proof-of-concept phase and postpone the significant expansion of the development team until the year 2023," says CEO Tero Virtala.

Remedy Entertainment has a great deal on its plate right now, and while the bulk of its upcoming projects are the kind of single player experiences the studio’s always been known for, with the free-to-play PvPvE title codenamed Vanguard, it’s also branching out and experimenting with fresh ideas.

The development period of that game, however, is being extended. Remedy Entertainment recently announced that it’s lowering its revenue and operating result outlook for 2022, which is down to the fact that Vanguard is going to be in the pre-production stage longer than previously planned.

In a statement, Remedy Entertainment CEO Tero Virtala says that keeping the game in the proof-of-concept stage longer will allow the team to “design, prepare and test key elements of the game before the project moves onto a phase of development where a larger team is required.” As such, Vanguard is now expected to enter full production sometime in 2023.

“Remedy is currently working on five world-class game titles, and our capability to develop these games is stronger than ever,” Virtala says. “With our transition to a multi-project operating model, we have learned that it is better to keep our game projects in the early development phase for a longer period of time than in the past. The benefit of this is that the development team size and thus the operating costs stay lower, and it gives the teams the time they require to design, prepare and test key elements of the game before the project moves onto a phase of development where a larger team is required. By doing this, we are supporting both high quality as well as cost-efficient game development.

“We have decided to keep the game codenamed Vanguard longer in the current proof-of-concept phase and postpone the significant expansion of the development team until the year 2023. This will postpone income from 2022 to 2023, which means that we expect our 2022 revenue to remain at the previous year’s level and our operating result to decline significantly compared to the year 2021.”

The next big game that’s expected from Remedy Entertainment is Alan Wake 2, which is due out sometime in 2023, but the studio has plenty else in the pipeline as well, including a sequel to Control, a multiplayer Control spinoff codenamed Condor, and the Max Payne 1 and 2 remake.

Remedy’s five projects are in production across four development teams. In November 2021, the developer also opened a new studio in Stockholm, Sweden.

Remedy Entertainment has entered into a development and publishing agreement with Tencent for its upcoming PvE shooter codenamed Vanguard.

Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment (best known for its work on games such as Max Payne and Control) have entered into a development, license, and distribution agreement with tech giant Tencent. The two parties will be working together in creating a free-to-play co-op PvE shooter codenamed “Vanguard”.

Vanguard is currently in the earliest stages of development, and will be the first games-as-a-service title to be developed by the studio. It will be developed using Unreal Engine for PC as well as console platforms. According to the agreement, Tencent will localize the game for Asian markets and will presumably work on a mobile version of the game further down the line. The budget for the game is said to be that of “a typical Remedy AAA” title.

“Vanguard marks Remedy’s first entry into Games-as-a-Service business model, executed by our top tier team of free-to-play experts,” said CEO of Remedy Entertainment Tero Virtala. “We are building something new and exciting for co-operative multiplayer space, on top of Remedy’s strengths. Expanding our capabilities to take on publishing responsibilities is the next step in the development of our company.

“We are excited for this long-term partnership with Tencent and with confidence can say that it is an excellent fit in supporting Vanguard’s ambitious plans. Vanguard is a global opportunity, and Tencent can support Remedy internationally, and lead the operations in Asia and the mobile markets.”

This announcement also follows shortly after Tencent acquired a minority stake Remedy Entertainment. As it stands, Remedy has multiple projects planned for the near future – Alan Wake 2, a Control multiplayer spinoff codenamed Condor, a full-blown sequel to Control, and the single-player portion of CrossfireX, and maybe even more.

Remedy Entertainment's headcount has grown to nearly 300 people, and the developer has provided updates on several upcoming projects.

A little over a year ago, Remedy Entertainment entered into a publishing agreement with Epic Games for two games, one of which was going to be a full-blown AAA project. Earlier this year, reports emerged that the game in question was going to be Alan Wake 2, fully funded by Epic. Now, that game’s development has started.

In their recent fiscal report, the developer confirmed that the AAA project funded by Epic Games has now finally moved into full production. Meanwhile, the second project being made in partnership with Epic Games, continues to make good progress in development.

Remedy also says that the development of CrossfireX is progressing well, with the game set to launch some time this year. Meanwhile, Vanguard – Remedy’s upcoming free-to-play co-op title – is also “progressing at a good pace” and has had “selected internal and external closed gameplay tests.”

All in all, Remedy says its headcount of employees has grown to nearly 300 people (293, to be exact, as of the end of June)- which makes sense, seeing as they have multiple major games in the works. A 4-player PvE co-op spinoff of Control called Condor is also in the works, while a full-blown sequel has also entered early pre-production.

The developer has a strong outlook going into the second half of the year.

Developer Remedy Entertainment has been around the block a few times, and crafted some truly special games. Coming to prominence with the Max Payne series, then moving on to the cult hit Alan Wake, and the recent Control that saw high critical acclaim, the company really has some hits. And thankfully, it seems as if they have a pretty strong outlook for the future as well.

The company released their half-year financial report. In it the company reported 23% increased revenue compared to last year and 116% growth in operating profit. That puts them in a good position going into the final stretch of this year. They also offered an update on the long in development Vanguard, a multiplayer IP that has been talked about for a good while.

“The team working on Vanguard – a project also based on our own IP – has taken the game’s internally playable development version further, continuously evaluating, learning and adjusting the development. Some parts of the game show very good promise, some parts have been redesigned. We continue this iterative Vanguard-development with a mission to combine long-term service-based multiplayer experiences with Remedy’s unique game style. The game is developed with the Unreal 4 engine and the early phase work continues with a small team.”

That wasn’t the only game talked about, as they also went into detail about an unannounced game they have that will be published by Epic Games. It was announced earlier in the year that Epic had signed publishing deals with multiple developers, and while Remedy didn’t detail what that game was, they did give some insight into how the deal came to be and confirmed it was based on an IP created and owned by Remedy, very possibly the game they’ve mentioned they’re working on that is set in their shared universe.

“Our third unannounced project has proceeded well. We also have an additional smaller-scale project in development within the same franchise. Remedy had several good publisher candidates for the projects and we chose to sign a publishing deal with Epic Games. They were the best fit for these games, based on their experience as a developer, track-record of expanding into new areas of gaming business and ambition to take game publishing to a new level. As the publisher, Epic covers development and marketing costs. Once these costs are recouped from game sales, Remedy receives a 50% share of net revenue. Both projects are based on a game IP created and owned by Remedy, and we retain full creative freedom and ownership in this regard.”

Currently, we know Remedy is planning to release the last expansion for Control, AWE, later this month, as well Control Ultimate Edition that will see the game coming to Steam and consoles. They are also the developers of the CrossfireX campaign mode that will come to Xbox One and Xbox Series X later this year. Between that and the unannounced titles and whatever form Vanguard will take, the developer is a busy one.

If that wasn’t the most sarcastic headline, as the latest trailer for Gatling Gears, shit blowing up everywhere! There are so many explosions, I am not sure there is anything in the game that does not explode. You may remember the developer Vanguard who brought us the game Greed Corp, but now they have got Gatling Gears for us being published by EA it looks like a pretty intense arcade game. The game is a top down, duel-stick shooter that will be out for Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network and PC thing spring. Check out the damage:
