#1. THE ELDER SCROLLS 2: DAGGERFALL
The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall’s entire map’s size was 161,600 km2. No matter what game you’re talking about, no matter who made it, no matter when that game came out, that is a ridiculously staggering number. It’s worth noting that instead of hand designing the full map, most of Daggerfall’s map – the country wilderness – was procedurally generated during development. This isn’t to say that the game’s map is random, mind you. The map itself is static, which means that towns and cities and landmarks and locations always stay where they are- it was only during development that procedural generation was used to create the bulk of it. Still, 161,600 km2? That’s insane.
