The Elder Scrolls Online: Character Progression, Skill And Attribute Points Explained

The return of the skill tree.

Bethesda Softworks have released a new video which takes us behind the scenes of The Elder Scrolls Online as the lead gameplay designer walks us through the character progression aspect of the game’s development. The philosophy of The Elder Scrolls is fairly simple: Be who you want to be.

In this video we are taken through the various ways in which characters can be augmented, with skill points and attribute points being earned from leveling up or advancing skills, and those points being allocated however the player sees fit.

The Elder Scrolls Online takes the “skill tree” route in terms of learning new character spells and abilities. This approach is very similar to that of Diablo 2, which was universally praised for its character customization via skill tree. Overall this system makes one very invested in the character and pick skills to invest in carefully, as certain skills are more of a long-term investment.
