It seems Naughty Dog’s highly anticipated The Last of Us Part 2 has gotten off to a flying start. As revealed by GamesIndustry’s Christopher Dring on Twitter, the action-adventure title has enjoyed the biggest launch for a video game in the UK this year, beating even Animal Crossing: New Horizons “by far”, which broke several records when it launched.
On top of that, the game’s launch sales figures are “comfortably bigger” than the first game in the series. Meanwhile, The Last of Us Part 2 has also become Sony’s fastest selling PS4 game ever in the UK, exceeding the launch sales of the likes of Uncharted 4, God of War, and Marvel’s Spider-Man. All of this, incidentally, only accounts for the boxed retail sales of all games concerned.
Given the ridiculous level of anticipation and the pedigree that both the property and its developers carry, it was never in doubt that The Last of Us Part 2 would be a commercial success. The good news is that the game is deserving of that success. Make sure to read our review of The Last of Us Part 2 – in which we called it a “masterpiece of storytelling and game design” – through here.
The Last of Us Part 2 is available now on PS4. The full UK charts for last week will be available soon, so stay tuned for those. Meanwhile, you can check out our in-depth technical analysis of Naughty Dog’s latest through here.
The Last of Us Part II is the UK’s fastest selling Sony game on PS4, bigger than the Uncharted 4 launch in boxed sales alone. It’s the biggest game launch this year by far, smashing the opening sales of Animal Crossing, and comfortably bigger than its predecessor
