the last of us part 2

Naughty Dog’s latest PS4 exclusive, The Last of Us Part 2, has clearly gotten off to a strong start. In the UK, for instance, it enjoyed a record-breaking debut, while worldwide, it became the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive ever. In fact, in the UK, as per data shared by Gfk (via GamesIndustry), The Last of Us Part 2 was the highest selling boxed game across all of June, selling more physical copies than the rest of the top 10 combined.

It’s not the only Sony game in the top 20 either, with The Last of Us: Remastered and Marvel’s Spider-Man also figuring in the charts, while others such as Days Gone, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and God of War also selling high (probably thanks to the Days of Play promotional campaign held by Sony during the month). Collectively, Sony was the biggest publisher in UK for the month, beating Nintendo. 29 per cent of all boxed games sold were Sony-published, while 37 per cent of the boxed sales revenue was generated by Sony.

Nintendo also had multiple releases in the charts, with consistent performances like Ring Fit Adventure, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe all in the top 10. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition ranked at No. 10 as well, while surpisingly, Bravely Second: End Layer – which saw some pretty impressive sales last week due to a sale – came in at No. 12.

Other perennial top sellers like FIFA 20, Grand Theft Auto 5, Minecraft, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare also ranked high. Collectively, 1.24 million physical copies of games were sold in UK during June, up 44 per cent over May. June also saw console sales increasing thanks to lockdowns put in place due to the pandemic, with a 41 per cent year-over-year increase, but still down 12 per cent from last month.
