CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, released earlier this year, is a masterpiece. It delivers a compelling, tightly written final adventure for Geralt of Rivia, and somehow does not lose its narrative focus even as it sets all of this in a vast, continent sized open world.
And what an open world it is! With multiple sub regions that would pass for entire maps in other games, and geographies ranging from the highly urban to the swamps, to forests, and to icy mountains that recall 2011’s Skyrim, The Witcher 3’s open world is vast, mysterious, and exciting. It can also be a bit overwhelming.
