An alternate personality
Nothing lets you hides like an alternate personality disorder. The best example of this is Deadly Premonition protagonist Francis York Morgan, who constantly ignores the other characters in the game in favour of making asides to his other personality Zach. It turns out later that York was originally the alternate persona, but changed places with Zach following a childhood trauma. Handy that.
