Amnesia: The Dark Descent
First-person horror titles were always a thing but Amnesia: The Dark Descent did more than that. It tapped into a well of fear, evidenced by the need for light and maintaining one’s sanity. The sheer lack of exposition with only fleeting notes providing some background helped guide us on an eerie mystery. The monsters roaming the castle kept us on our toes while also reinforcing one’s helplessness. It might not have done anything amazingly new but Amnesia tapped into the simple fears effectively well.
