The very first Final Fantasy movie was a sequel to a game that didn’t even show up in the U.S. until a year after the movie did.
When Final Fantasy started to become really successful, almost every company and Tom, Dick and Harry wanted to cash in on the success, and understandably so. A couple of years had passed and then in 1994, Square approved Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals, which was a direct sequel to Final Fantasy V. When Final Fantasy VII became a major hit, Urban Vision snatched it up for U.S. release in 1998, in order to take advantage of on the series’ new found popularity. However the game on which it was based on, didn’t see a release date until a later year, so the American public was a bit confused.
