Uncharted is a Series “We Want to See More of” – Naughty Dog

"Uncharted is a franchise that the studio loves," Uncharted: The Lost Legacy's creative director Shaun Escayg says.

Since Uncharted 4 in 2016 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy in 2017, Naughty Dog’s blockbuster franchise has been on the backburner. With the former of those two games having been positioned as a definite conclusion to Nathan Drake’s story and Naughty Dog itself seemingly having turned its focus to other projects, questions have been asked whether it’s going to be a while before we see a new Uncharted game.

While there’s no definite word yet on whether there will be a new game or how long of a wait it’ll be until that happens, Naughty Dog’s Shaun Escayg – creative director on the aforementioned The Lost Legacy – recently said in an interview with GamesRadar that Uncharted is “a franchise that the studio loves” and something that Naughty Dog “wants to see more of.”

“I think we can say for certain that we can never say never,” Escayg said when asked if Naughty Dog had considered going back to Uncharted. “Uncharted is a franchise we love – that the studio loves. I love, and Kurt [Margenau, co-lead designer on Uncharted 4 and game director on The Lost Legacy] loves. It’s a world we want to see more of. So I can certainly say that.”

Again, that’s far from a concrete answer, but it’s certainly in line with what the studio’s position on Uncharted has been of late. Back in August of last year, Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells said that the studio still has “a ton of love” for the Uncharted IP. Interestingly, reports have claimed that a new Uncharted game was in development at SIE Bend Studio at one point, before being shelved so that the studio could be allowed to move on to its own new IP.

Of course, Uncharted fans do still have plenty to look forward to in the short term, with Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection launching for the PS5 imminently and the Uncharted movie releasing not long afterwards. You can read our review of the former through here.
