Valve inviting 5000 more users to Steam Linux beta

Posted By | On 22nd, Nov. 2012

The Steam beta for Linux began a few days ago, and it took in 1000 Linux users to test the service on the new platform. It launched with 12 Steam titles and the Big Picture mode, and runs on Ubuntu 12.04. Now, Valve is looking to expand the beta by adding an extra 5000 members.

“We’re making good progress finding and fixing issues that our users have reported so we’re expanding the beta by 5000 before the long holiday (US) weekend kicks in,” Valve said on Steam’s site. “New limited beta testers will have an email notification in their inbox.”

When the beta launched a couple weeks back, Gabe Newell said it was a big opportunity for PC gaming to expand even more. He said: “This is a huge milestone in the development of PC gaming. Steam users have been asking us to support gaming on Linux. We’re happy to bring rich forms of entertainment and our community of users to this open, customer-friendly platform.”

Stay tuned for continued updates.
