While there’s plenty of hype for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2’s campaign, the Operations should have players returning for more. Available solo and for up to three players in co-op, the Operations see players controlling their own Space Marine through combat, completing different objectives and tackling bosses.

In a new interview with WCCF Tech, Saber Interactive CCO Tim Willits revealed how Operations tie into the campaign. “When you play through the campaign, there are times when other Space Marine squads go off and do other important missions in the big storyline, so it’s like there’s one mission where you have to send a signal, and the defenses have to be knocked out, and you hear that there’s a squad doing that.

“Well, when you play PvE Operations, you’re that squad. The battle is so big, and there’s so much going on that we’ve engineered these co-op missions to fit into the story and make you feel part of the bigger conflict.”

Willits also revealed there’s some randomness at play during Operations, influencing the enemies that can spawn. “The game knows that you’ve played those missions before, and if you play them again, you can have different enemies, so you may play a mission, and then all of a sudden, Chaos Marines show up. We do add variety to that.”

Of course, you’ll still deal with Tyranid swarms, with Willits reiterating much of what he outlined about the AI Director at Gamescom. The goal is to make players feel like “the ultimate killing machine” but also overwhelm them.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 launches on September 9th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Operations offer six maps at launch, but new missions and Lethal difficulty are coming in October with Season 2. There will be another PvE mission added in Season 3 next year, with a Horde Mode slated for Season 4. Check out the post-launch roadmap for more details.
