While Bungie’s revival of Marathon has been shrouded in quite a bit of mystery, the studio is getting to reveal more details about the title later this week. In the mean time, however, a rumour has popped up indicating that Marathon will be coming out some time this year.

According to Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, Bungie is planning for a 2025 release of Marathon. Considering this, the studio will also likely announce the official release date alongside the gameplay reveal planned for April 12.

In a post on social media platform X, Henderson jokes about his wife signing him up for a gym membership when he tells her that he will be on a Marathon grind later this year. When asked for confirmation from a follower about whether this means Marathon will be out this year, he simply replies by saying “Yes.”

“Told the missus I’ll be on a Marathon grind later this year and she’s only gone and signed me up the gym,” posted Henderson on X.

Bungie officially announced the gameplay reveal for Marathon through a trailer released earlier this month. While the trailer itself doesn’t give us too many details about the game aside from letting us grab some sneak peeks at its environments and sound design, it did indicate that, in some way, it might follow-up on the story threads that Bungie had first set down all the way back in the 1990s with its original Marathon trilogy.

The announcement came a couple of months after rumours came about that Bungie is gearing up to showcase Marathon in a major way. Back in February, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb commented on the fact that Marathon was missing from Sony’s State of Play showcase at the time because Bungie was planning its own showcase for the game.

“Bungie does their own thing usually for Destiny, they’re going to adopt that same ‘We’re talking to our audience’ strategy this year as well, so I think April,” said Grubb. “We’ll probably hear from them about Marathon, and it would just be its own thing separate from a State of Play.”

In the meantime, Bungie has also been constantly updating the Steam database entries for Marathon. Just last month, the company added a few new “app types” to the Steam database listing for Marathon. This indicates that the company is getting closer to the title’s release, and is gearing up to launch the game alongside some DLC or expansion passes.

Bungie has also been keen on expanding its playtests for Marathon leading up to its gameplay reveal. Back in October, director Joe Ziegler mentioned wanting to get more players into playtests so that the studio could get more feedback on how the game was shaping up.

According to Ziegler, the studio is “expanding our playtests a little bit wider and wider. We’re looking to add a significant amount of players to each of our milestones as we’re going forward, and some of these big inflections are opportunities for you all to join us.”

Marathon was announced all the way back in 2023. The game is in development for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. If you’re interested in knowing where the game’s name comes from, check out our coverage of the classic Marathon trilogy being available on PC.
