Albert Panello, the senior director of product management for the Xbox One shared in a recent interview with Engadget that the day one update which will be released on Xbox One release day is not optional. Meaning, all gamers will need to apply the update before they’re able to do anything.

“You need the day one update,” he said. “Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update. A lot of the apps come with the day one update because they wouldn’t have even been done.

“You’re gonna need to take this update. It’s not gonna be really an optional thing.”

But before you get mad and condemn Microsoft for once again flipping the scrip and further inconveniencing the gaming experience for it’s customers, bear in mind that PS4 will also require a similar day one update. These updates contain a lot of necessary information that developers weren’t able to squeeze into their development window. It’s just a mild inconvenience at the end of the day.
