Xbox One X Lead Platform For Playground Games’ New AAA Open World RPG

"It's a great piece of kit to be developing your game on."

Playground Games is currently hard at work on a brand new AAA open world action RPG- this is what we know officially. Rumors peg the new game to be a Fable 4 (which would be awesome), but that’s as of right now unconfirmed.

Whatever the new game does end up being, however, it sounds like it will be developed for the Xbox One X as the lead platform. Speaking to Digital Foundry, Playground Games confirmed that the new game will target the Xbox One X first, and explained the benefits of developing for that system.

“We are obviously beginning development on a new unannounced title right now,” they said. “And the development platform for that game is Xbox One X, which is great for us, and ultimately for the players in a number of ways. First of all, it’s great to develop for, it’s incredibly powerful, it has more memory than we’ve ever had. So it’s a great piece of kit to be developing your game on. And the easier and faster you can develop, the more things you can get done.”

But doesn’t developing for the Xbox One X mean that the game might be compromised on the Xbox One and Xbox One S, which comprise the bulk of the install base? According to Playground Games, no.

“I definitely think that during development, we see trickle down benefits to other platforms we develop for, such as the Xbox One, or even PC. And I think that comes from the standardized unified test tools we are working on.”

So there you have it, then- the new game that they are developing will be made with the Xbox One X in mind. I wonder how many more of Microsoft’s first party titles will actually be targeting the Xbox One X first, and then be ported to the One S and PC from there.
