Amid all the information that has emerged on the upcoming next-gen consoles so far, the one point of hot debate over the last couple of days – one among many, to be honest – is backward compatibility. Sony ruffled a few feathers when they revealed during their recent PS5 deep dive that their upcoming console would feature limited backward compatibility with the PS4 at launch- but you don’t have to worry about such restrictions with the Xbox Series X.

Responding to a question on Twitter, the official Xbox account confirmed that the upcoming console will be able to play every single game in the Xbox One library right off the bat, while all the games from the original Xbox and the Xbox 360’s lineups that are currently playable via their backward compatibility program would also be playable on the Xbox Series X.

Given the way Microsoft has handled backward compatibility these past few years and given what their messaging about it has been for the years to come, this doesn’t come as a surprise- but it’s still nice to have a confirmation. Recently, they gave some more details on the topic as well, confirming that select older games will natively run at higher resolutions on the Xbox Series X, while some will even be able to natively support HDR.

You can read our in-depth breakdown of the Xbox Series X’s full specs through here. The console is still scheduled for a Holiday 2020 launch.
