DX 12 Will Make Porting Easier, ‘Definitely’ Possible Xbox One Gets Performance Boost: RedLynx

Lead graphics programmer Sebastian Aaltonen says he is “eagerly awaiting to get our hands dirty” with DX 12.

Microsoft recently revealed DirectX 12, the next iteration of its graphical API, and there been an on-going discussion in the public domain about it. Can it really increase the Xbox One’s performance as proclaimed by some developers? An API works to increase the efficiency of the GPU, thus ensuring it performs better than before, but does that constitute any viable performance boost?

In a recent tech interview, Digital Foundry spoke to RedLynx’s lead graphics programmer Sebastian Aaltonen about the same, especially since the latter has experience in working with Microsoft GPUs in a low-level manner (with the Trials franchise). Will DirectX 12 provide a substantial difference to Xbox One development?

Aaltonen stated that, “Xbox 360 got a big boost from the low-level graphics API. We managed to hit up to 10k draw calls per frame (at 60fps) in Trials Evolution using the low-level Xbox 360 graphics API, as discussed in our earlier interview. We are eagerly waiting to get our hands dirty with DirectX 12. It’s definitely possible that Xbox One will also get a performance boost from a new low-level API.”

He further emphasized that it would make porting easier, though some work still needs to be done due to the unified memory of consoles. “If we have the same API on both the console and PC, porting and code maintenance will be also easier. However consoles have unified memory and PC doesn’t, so there still needs to be multiple code paths, for example with data streaming from HDD to GPU. Same is true for any CPU+GPU interoperation. If you need to move the data between them, you most likely want to select a different algorithm for PC, because the PCI Express bandwidth and latency are very slow compared to direct unified memory access of consoles.”

      Of course software can lead to better performance, but unless the previous software was atrocious, it won’t be a significant benefit.

      Software can’t make up for a hardware gap if both systems software is well optimized, so PS4 will have a graphics advantage the entire generation.

      This is true, but it’s also [possible that, while Sony maintains a lead in hardware (obviously) they may not hit the same efficiency in software optimization. It’s not likely parity will ever happen (when has it ever) but it’s very possible the gap will close once 1) devs have better tools and 2) actually take time to port things properly (why Trials in particular doesn’t run 1080p on Xbox is pure laziness. Xbox One is at least exponentially more powerful than the 360 which itself runs the game at 600p, so why they are unable to exceed the additional 300 lines is beyond me (I realize it’s not THAT simple, but you get my argument)

    The paradox is that game development is really complex and that middleware business is an additional factor to consider.
    Finally, most of gamer are really not educated to understand in depth hardware and software issues, because it’s a job and not an hobbie to write some efficient code for those devices. And I’m pretty sure that educated adults in this business are not spending time on gaming forums.
    Let’s just Google first years hardware comparisons beetween Xbox 360 and PS3 and see how much errors and shortcuts a journalist can make.
    The fact is that by combinating hardware, software, time to market, development cost, grapjics engine standardization and middleware evolution, those 2 consoles will soon deliver the same quality … and so it will be possible to discuss on those forums about pure video game, innovation, fun and creativity without being insulted by totally immature addicted fanboys.

      You’re right, but people will continue to pretend like it’s easy, and thus demand more because “they can.” The anonymity of the internet makes people incredibly douchey on forums and comments sections. It’s pretty gross — and makes me sad to say I’m part of this community full of so many people that have a hard time using their brains for anything.

    I hope so, cuz i am not even remotely impressed by the subpar performace of the X1 thus far. 720p first party exclusives with weak framerate performance for a system that is more expensive is unacceptable. I sincerely hope they can make this POS worth it. Because so far its garbage. The 360 was a far better system. MS went all Nintendo on our behinds.

      PS4 will have better performing games for the entire generation as it has more powerful hardware, you can’t overcome a hardware gap with better drivers/SDKs. Any game running on Xbox One can be run with better framerate/resolution/visual effects on PS4.

      If they’re both running at the same resolution the Xbox version will have lower framerate and/or visual effects, or the PS4 hardware isn’t being pushed.

      Q: Is SHADOW FALL running 1080p natively?

      In both SP and MP, KILLZONE SHADOW FALL outputs a full, unscaled 1080p image at up to 60 FPS. Native is often used to indicate images that are not scaled; it is native by that definition.

      In Multiplayer mode, however, we use a technique called “temporal reprojection,” which combines pixels and motion vectors from multiple lower-resolution frames to reconstruct a full 1080p image. If native means that every part of the pipeline is 1080p then this technique is not native.

      Games often employ different resolutions in different parts of their rendering pipeline. Most games render particles and ambient occlusion at a lower resolution, while some games even do all lighting at a lower resolution. This is generally still called native 1080p. The technique used in KILLZONE SHADOW FALL goes further and reconstructs half of the pixels from past frames.

      We recognize the community’s degree of investment on this matter, and that the conventional terminology used before may be too vague to effectively convey what’s going on under the hood. As such we will do our best to be more precise with our language in the future.

      Q: So how does “temporal reprojection” work and what’s the difference with up-scaling?

      Up-scaling is a spatial interpolation filter. When up-scaling an image from one resolution to another, new pixels are added by stretching the image in X/Y dimension. The values of the new pixels are picked to lie in between the current values of the pixels. This gives a bigger, but slightly blurrier picture.

      Temporal reprojection is a technique that tracks the position of pixels over time and predicts where they will be in future. These “history pixels” are combined with freshly rendered pixels to form a higher-resolution new frame. This is what KILLZONE SHADOW FALL uses in multiplayer.

      So, in a bit more detail, this is what we need for this technique:

      We keep track of three images of “history pixels” sized 960×1080

      The current frame

      The past frame

      And the past-past frame

      For each pixel we store its color and its motion vector – i.e. the direction of the pixel on-screen

      We also store a full 1080p, “previous frame” which we use to improve anti-aliasing

      Then we have to reconstruct every odd pixel in the frame:

      We track every pixel back to the previous frame and two frames ago, by using its motion vectors

      By looking at how this pixel moved in the past, we determine its “predictability”

      Most pixels are very predictable, so we use reconstruction from a past frame to serve as the odd pixel

      If the pixel is not very predictable, we pick the best value from neighbors in the current frame

      On occasion the prediction fails and locally pixels become blurry, or thin vertical lines appear. However, most of the time the prediction works well and the image is identical to a normal 1080p image. We then increase sub-pixel anti-aliasing using our 1080p “previous frame” and motion vectors, further improving the image quality.

      The temporal reprojection technique gave subjectively similar results and it makes certain parts of the rendering process faster. This reduces controller lag and increases responsiveness, which improves the KILLZONE SHADOW FALL multiplayer experience.
