Insider: Uncharted on PS4 To Have Gameplay Fidelity Comparable To The Last of Us Cutscenes

Also talks about the performance overhead of the PS4 compared to Xbox One.

uncharted ps4

Impressed with The Order: 1886 and how it shows off the PS4′s power despite being so early in development? Then you’ll be getting a kick out of Naughty Dog’s next Uncharted when it arrives.

Industry insider Ahsan Rasheed, who goes by the handle “thuway” on NeoGAF, recently tweeted about how the “Next Uncharted will have fidelity in gameplay that is comparable to cutscenes in The Last Of Us.” It also seems that there’s “Something also about a boat.”

Vehicular sections in speedboats? We’ll have to wait for more information but considering the already impressive fidelity of The Last of Us’s cinematics, this is some truly startling news.

But that’s not all. Rasheed also tweeted about how “It’s safe to say the PS4 has approximately a 100 percent performance overhead over the Xbox One. 100 percent.”

Do you agree with the above? Given the number of games that are failing to reach 1080p resolution on the Xbox One – either due to eSRAM or something else – it’s certainly possible that the PS4 is much more powerful. But a 100 percent overhead? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

  • Mikeherp Derp

I assume the 100% is a combination of greater hardware power and less system overhead or reserves.

    • Eagles83

The PS4 is certainly more powerful than the Xbox One when it comes to pure hardware power and the fact that the Xbox One reserves some of the GPU headroom for the kinect but it will not be 100%. The PS4 gpu isn’t that powerful overall to have that much more room. If that was the case then all PS4 games would hit the mark of 1080p. This is just more sensationalism. I’d be willing to bet the performance gap is more like 30%.

    • Mikeherp Derp

I’m willing to bet you’re clueless and delusional.

    • Eagles83

I benchmark CPU’s and GPU’s all the time and can provide examples that the increase in GPU power based on the number of GPU cores isn’t a linear growth (quick example being GTX 680 and 780, 780 has 50% more cores but only has 22% improvement). You comment on many articles and copy and paste things to show the PS4 is better and I agree that when it comes to graphics it is. I’m on your side. I am just going to correct you when you don’t know what you are talking about.

    • Mikeherp Derp

“If that was the case then all PS4 games would hit the mark of 1080p.” Completely wrong and clueless. Resolution is a dev choice with framerate/effects tradeoffs. Even if PS4 were more powerful than it is some devs would still choose 900p for more effects or framerate.

PS4 and Xbox are very similar architectures, 6 more CUs (540 more Gflops) will scale very well, certainly not as low as “30% performance difference”. Some of that claimed “100%” is undoubtedly software/drivers/OS overhead, but 30% of it being hardware is lowballing it. You’re cherry picking Nvidia card benchmarks, clueless.

You don’t know what you are talking about.

    • Eagles83

I used nvidia in my reference but the same rules apply to AMD cards. They have to operate under the same laws of physics and diminishing returns. Look at benchmarks online from Tom’s hardware and others and you can see this for yourself.

As for the trade offs remark, devs only say that when the systems are not strong enough to handle the load. Do you see any PC games where devs decided to use a lower resolution to crank up the effects……the answer is no because you are wrong.

The 100% claim is just ludicrous all around because the PS4 doesn’t even have 100% better hardware and as I mentioned before gpu power doesn’t scale linearly. It is completely illogical but there is some credence to the driver issue that you pointed out. When I say 30% performance gap I am talking about when the drivers issue is a thing of the past. It may be a big more than the 30% now but nowhere near 100%.

    • Mikeherp Derp

      Durrrrrrrr backpedaling!

Factual PS4 Hardware Advantages: +6 CUs, +560 GFlops, +16 ROPs, +8 ACEs/CQs, better GPGPU support, better performing CPU, and faster unified memory. PS4 OS may also have less overhead or reserves.

It’s not just the 560 GFlops but the ROPs and memory width/size issues bottlenecking the GPU. Don’t forget GPGPU and unified memory as well.

    • Dakan45

you are the clueless delusional sony dck licker so speak for yourself kiddo.

I’m afraid people have already seen that type of gameplay visuals in The Order:1886 so Uncharted 4 will be no surprise graphics wise. You need to wow us more this time by gameplay and story Naughty Dog.

    Boat’s??? Pirate Treasure Confirmed.

    • DarthDiggler

We haven’t seen anything from UC4 and if it looks like TLOU cutscenes I am much excite.

    • Guest

TBH Beyond failed to get proper recognition. But trust me the real rulers would be Quantic Dream if they can get the controls and gameplay in their next release straight.

    • Conrad Hilaire

Seriously dude you’re right about that. There are some ULTRA photorealistic sections in Beyond. Quantic D are the only devs that can (graphically) go toe to toe with Naughty Dog. Well said.

    • Tim

Naughty Dog are the best developers in the world, don’t underestimate their technical expertise, they will get closest to maxing the PS4.

  • vcarvega

That’s cool, and I’m sure the game will be great… But the cut scenes of TLOU don’t look as good as The Order anyway. I would hope it looks better than TLOU cut scenes.

    • Axe99

+1 – TLoU is great, but I’d be surprised if UC4 wasn’t a deal better than it.

  • NeonPriest

Man I hope Uncharted is innovative and has new gameplay elements instead of just focusing on looks like The Order which just looks like a Gears clone albeit pretty. Judging by past Uncharted games, it’s up in the air.

    • Daniel Dorestant

You haven’t even played the order yet

    • Dakan45

well said, resistance 2 was a great game, now why do they insist on making games generic samey shooters with humans? I just saw the other oder game.. wolfenstein the new order, robots and big dual machineguns, thats more like it.

    • vcarvega

Well, at the very least, past Uncharted games were all better than the Gears games… So there’s that. But I do hope they innovate in game play as well.

    • sd

Such a strange comparison. Gears is an amazing third person shooter. Uncharted is probably the best action adventure game. They couldnt be more different. Not sure why they are really being compared.

    • Mikeherp Derp

The Order will have good gameplay. Keep crying over “your PS4″.

  • Escopablobar

100% may be a bit of hyperbole but PS4 definitely has an advantage over the X1 when it comes to raw power and performance. I can’t wait for Uncharted. Until then The Order will hopefully satiate our desire for graphical splendor, sound mechanics and compelling narrative.

  • Dakan45

The last of us had blurry textures and awful lighting with no ambient occlusion, it will be nice to say the gameplay is on par with shadowfall or the order or bf4 than the last of us, infact even killzone 3 had better lighting and tetures than the last of us.

    • John D

You must have played a different version of Last of Us then I did. Or you have one terrible TV.

  • Jamic

I really call BS on the 100% overhead, but it doesnt matter either way. PS4 is still stronger.

  • sonic22

Order 1886 was a very linear and scripted game with poor textures i hope ND do a better job with PS4.

    • Dakan45

Oh look another dumb sony dck licker.

He is talkign about the gameplay idiot.

  • LordArklon

Uh…that sounds like a step backward if you ask me. Really? Cutscenes from a last gen game that utilized in-game assets loaded with filters? Give me a break. I know that diminishing returns will become an even greater factor as we move forward, but this has by far been the smallest performance jump we’ve seen in console history. I may skip this generation entirely; not one game I’ve seen has legitimately floored me as with generations past.

    • Conrad Hilaire

The logic is weak with you my friend…

    • LordArklon

Then refute it with a logical argument and enlighten me, rather than just being trite and snide. I’m open to a mature discussion if you are. As a gamer all my life, I simply haven’t been impressed with what I’ve been shown lately, from any console or platform.

    • Mikeherp Derp

The article is about graphics, not gameplay, delusional sperg cretin. The gameplay details will come, in the meantime you can run around like an imbecile screaming FUD and defacating yourself at the thought of PS4 outselling 2-3:1 every month.

    • Dakan45

yeah lets suck sony dck for graphics, delusionl cretin.

    • Conrad Hilaire

You are right I was being trite and snide and I apologize. Don’t take this the wrong way, but you might be one of those people who hates games or movies that are universally loved. And that’s ok. :-)

    • Manoj Varughese

And they say 720p makes no difference. Although not approve of all your statements, everyone’s entitled to their own opinions.

    • Zall

If you ever played The Last Of Us you would know that the cut scenes graphics are amazing, even when compared to the new-gen games. To get a get to run with those kind of graphics all the time would be amazing.

    • LordArklon

I have played it. Excellent game; excellent looking game, however, you’re missing the point. The graphics in TLOU, cutscenes or not, are capable within the confines of last gen hardware, and IMO, a new generation should be showing us things that the previous machines aren’t capable of. Thus far, that’s not what I’m seeing.

    • Mikeherp Derp

I can smell the ignorant autism on this post. LOL PS3 could never handle the soft body/dest ruction physics and graphics demands of The Order.

    • Dakan45

exactly sonytards think that they will see amazing things and they compare next gen with old gen games when deminishing returns are already happening mainly due to cost and work horus required to make those diffirencies, it just doesnt worth having the best graphics anymore, costs too much takes too much time to develop.

  • Manoj Varughese

“esRAM or something else?” It’s just technical incompetence from the Microsoft’s side where devs had to be screwed all the time and speak in support of it even it was not needed a warrant. I think they should stop supporting an incompetent hardware in the long run. Damn 720p is going backwards what-so-ever.
