Need for Speed: Rivals is an open-world racing video game that was developed at Ghost Games. Being the newest iteration of the popular racer, Need for Speed Rivals is the twentieth game in the long running racing franchise.

It was released on November 19th 2013 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and the PC. It was also later released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Development

After the critical and commercial success of Need for Speed Most Wanted in 2012, rumors of a new Need for Speed title began circulating in April 2013 when the resume of Pete Panton, lead cinematic artist for marketing at Criterion Games indicated that he is working on a new entry in the racing franchise.  His resume mentioned an unannounced game for 2013. Then in May, 2013 Electronic Arts started teasing a new Need for Speed game on their official Facebook page. They posted a picture of a sports car with the tagline “Have no rules, show no mercy”. [reference]

The next day EA confirmed that the next iteration of Need for Speed Rivals is on its way but they did not confirmed the name of the latest entry. On the same day, EA officially announced Need for Speed Rivals Announced for PS4, Xbox One and Current Gen Consoles. The game is developed by Ghost Games with Criterion providing support to them. Furthermore it was confirmed that Need for Speed Rivals will be using Enlighten, a lighting solution provided by Geomerics.

In addition, Need for Speed Rivals will be utilizing the next generation of Frostbite Engine (Frostbite 3) which will bring massive changes  to the graphics and gameplay in the Need For Speed series.

Gameplay

Need for Speed Rivals takes place in the world of  Redview County. As with previous installments, this will be an open world and will pit the player against fellow racers and cops.

Just like 2012’s Need for Speed: Most Wanted will feature with jumps, obstacles and speed traps in the open world. As was mentioned the theme Need for Speed is intact here and will follow racing against AI, heart thrilling police chases and unlock cars and more racing areas.

Executive Producer of Ghosts Games Marcus Nilsson stated in an interview, “The Need for Speed franchise has been an industry leader bringing social competition to the forefront in games. For the first time, players will have the freedom to seamlessly go from single player to co-op to multiplayer. In Need for Speed Rivals we are creating one game experience with one progression, where the freedom to play with friends is more fluid and accessible than ever before.” [reference]

Need for Rivals will also gives the player the ability to use EMPs, shockwaves, roadblocks and other means to combat foes.

Need for Speed Rivals also has a new AllDrive mode, which allows for single-player gamers to transition into multiplayer seamlessly. That means players can participate in a multiplayer event on the fly even when they are busy playing the campaign or offline mode.

The popular Autolog feature returns in Need For Speed Rivals and once against will pit players friend’s against them. Players can not only compare stats but they can also challenge friends. The game also features:
