Though virtual reality as a medium has its share of obstacles to overcome, Sony’s gamble with PlayStation VR has been paying off. According to Sony Interactive Entertainment president and global CEO Andrew House, the VR headset has managed to sell 915,000 units as of February 19th.
Speaking to The New York Times, House talked about the situation in Japan. “You literally have people lining up outside stores when they know stock is being replenished.”
Sony is projecting 1 million units sold within the first six months, essentially by mid-April since the console launched in October 2016. If things go according to plan, PlayStation VR should hit that even sooner.
House noted that with regards to the headset’s future, if a high single-digit percentage of all PS4 owners (currently numbering 53 million) purchased it, then he would be “very happy.”
