PS4 Will Outsell Xbox One This Holiday Season, Michael Pachter Says

‘Sony have a better brand.’

15 Ways to Enhance Your Experience on PS4 and Xbox One

Microsoft have been doing extremely well these past few months. They’ve put out some extremely compelling exclusives, with Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3, the Xbox One S has won rave acclaim everywhere, and Microsoft are now on top as far as NPD numbers go. All of this, plus their other initiatives, such as backwards compatibility and Play Anywhere, continue to garnet them goodwill, even as Sony’s recent moves have led to some backlash against them.

However, Michael Pachter, well known analyst of Wedbush Securities, doesn’t think that this will necessarily translate into higher sales for Microsoft this Holiday season. While he thinks that Microsoft will do well, he still thinks that Sony will take it this year, too.

‘Strong is relative, and I actually think that the announcement of the PS4 Pro probably froze some people and caused them not to buy PS4 Slim, because they are waiting,’ Pachter said, referencing the recent lull in PS4 sales. ‘I think Sony will still dominate in non English speaking countries, because they have a better brand. If you are up in France, or Italy, or Spain, or Germany, playing a PS1, then you love the PlayStation brand. And Xbox really didn’t have a successful console until the Xbox 360, and they gained some ground, but I think they lost bad at least half of that with the Xbox One.

‘So Sony is good. And the fact is that the PS4 Slim costs less than the Xbox One S, so I actually think that Sony has a huge advantage over Microsoft for the next few months. So yes, I think Microsoft will sell a lot, yes, I think they will consider this a very successful year, and yes, I think, PlayStation will outsell Xbox.’

I can’t say I disagree- whereas I entirely agree that Xbox has the stronger lineup of games this year, I also think that Sony’s one-two-three shot of PS4 Pro, PS4 Slim, and PSVR, will ensure that they end up winning by sheer volume, if nothing else.

    PSVR sales this far

    China 10K

    • James Fitzgerald

      Those arent big numbers

    • Triton

      They are terrible.

    • Troy Marcel

Especially in their home territory. People probably realized what the true cost was.

  • -youjustgotburned-

Why is Patcher still around. Everything he says anyone can come up with the same conclusion. People act like if his the only one who can predict this things.

  • SGlenn

PS4 Slim is not cheaper than the Xbox One S, they are the same Price: $299, with the Xbox One S being the technical superior device.

Not saying Xbox will outsell PS4, but the PS4 Slim will not be a major factor in it.

    • Riggybro

Xboxone S is the same ballpark specs as Xboxone.

If you are playing games on it PS4 slim is still technically superior.

    • SGlenn

I disagree for several reasons: First, the processor in the One S is improved, so closer to on par with ps4 slim, however, that is not the only reason the One S is better. The inclusion of a 4K Blu-ray player, 4k streaming and HDR gaming make it superior than the PS4S, especially when there is no price difference. I really was only pointing out that the author incorrectly stated the Slim was less expensive, when both are $299. As for which one is better, that is subjective, but as for better technology for the same price, the One S beats the Slim.

    • Affro-hop

I get your point but the PS4 is still the superior console at running games, which is what gamers buy a console for.

    • SGlenn

That is still a subjective statement. The ps4 is not any better and running its games than the Xbox is at running its games. That they may or may not run at native 1080p, or upscale from 900p, does not make the game run “better” and frankly is not really visible to the human eye.

That statement also makes it sound like the ps4 is the only viable choice for gaming, and if you want to play blurays get an Xbox one. While Sony has sold close to double this current gen console to this point, over 20 million “gamers” play on the Xbox, invalidating your argument.

Again, my statement was originally just trying to point that the author of the article made a mistake on pricing.

    • crazy_black_man-

“While Sony has sold close to double this current gen console to this point,…..”

Why are you still talking after making that point?

    • -youjustgotburned-

Why are you crying over his valid argument?

    • LifeOnMars

4k Blu-ray discs are very expensive.
      Warcraft:The Begining £12.99 on Blu-ray vs £23.99 Amazon UK.
For that reason 4K Blu-ray does not appeal tome at this moment in time.

    • SGlenn

Understandable, and most people don’t even have 4k tvs yet. But future proofing is a thing, so for most I imagine it’ll either be the ps4 pro or the Xbox One S this Christmas.

    • LifeOnMars

I own a 4K tv, Netfix 4k will do me for now.

    • Troy Marcel

It’s not true 4k unfortunately, I have Netflix as well and it doesn’t do proper 4k. You will notice the difference.

    • LifeOnMars

Yes I can see the difference over DVD, and when 4k blu-ray is better value I may well be tempted for the marginal increse in quality over std blu-ray

    • bardock5151

Unfortunately the minimum 25mbps requirement for sort of UHD, won’t do for most.

    • LifeOnMars

As I said , It will do for me.

    • theduckofdeath

My service plan throughput is 10 times that, though I haven’t decided on a set as of yet.

    • Triton

They will go down in price as the players become more common, just like the regular blu-ray did and the DVD’s before that.
That UHD player makes the Xbox One S a premium console and Sony cant compete with that for at least 2 years. Because putting a UHD player in a revisioned PS4 Pro before that would create an outrage through their fanbase (again).
And even if they do that later, the Xbox Scorpio will be there as a more powerful product with native 4K gaming.

    • Triton

No its not. PS4 Slim is lacking an IR port so you have to upgrade your home theatre too, it doesnt scale to 4K, it doesnt play native 4K discs and it only has 8-bit HDR for 1080p which no one supports.

    • Riggybro

That extra stuff sounds interesting. But most people will be buying a gaming machine for gaming. Hence my second paragraph.

    • Triton

Yeah maybe so, but you forget most high-end gaming headsets uses that port. This limits your options.

Also if you compete with a console that is 1:1 in price range, its an easy choice to pick the Xbox because of the value.
Sony have done some huge mistakes and are now dropping the casual users.

  • House of Elite Gaming

When scorpio comes up again at the new MS event people are goona say ill wait for that instead.

    • ShowanW

      they may…

but the one s having a 4k blu-ray player is still compelling for people out there…

    • James Fitzgerald

Not likely as it will likely be around 600$ minimum unless Microsoft is going to eat a large portion of the cost of the console to get it around 400$. Thats why the Ps4 didnt include a 4k blu ray and why Sony didnt increase the power of the Pro they simply upclocked and developed new rendering techniques to keep the cost of the unit down so they can still make money and still move units.

    • House of Elite Gaming

Maybe you missed where they said the xbox scorpio is going to be in a ball park price range of the ps4 pro.
If people want to buy a over clocked with the same chips and memory and spend over $400 by all means. Or you can save that and wait for a system that can really deliver with real specs and more then those 8 weak of gigs system.

Ps4 pro is a rip off.

    • James Fitzgerald

They never said that and its pretty vague statement dependsknf on the ball park 600$ could be the price.

    • bardock5151

“developed new rendering techniques” No, they didn’t. Checker board rendering is in no way a Sony developed method.
PS4 pro doesn’t include a 4K bluray player because they want you to buy their other 4K bluray player.
Sony didn’t simply “upclock”, they bolted a better GPU onto an antiquated CPU with a clock bump.

    • James Fitzgerald

Really you’ll have to prove that with a link because its the first Ive heard of it. Second they didnt bolt anything in they unlock some locked clocks in the gpu and turned the clocks up on both cpu and gpu. They didnt include bluray to keep cost down period, I can get a 4k samsung bluray player for free with a tv purchase or less than 80$ right now so your logic is flawed when the Sony version begins at 100$.

    • bardock5151

Go look at rainbow six siege. Valve even has its own version. https://forum.beyond3d.com/threads/ps4-pro-checkerboard-rendering.59626/
You can’t just up the clocks and get more CU’s, it’s a better GPU. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/09/sonys-ps4-pro-provides-a-mid-generation-graphics-bump-to-all-ps4-games/
      Samsung UHD bluray player. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/technology/samsungs-4k-bluray-player-goes-on-sale-in-australia/news-story/0db4525ef3c7dca873ccbee8b5e8c701
Amazon and pricing showing the difference between UPSCALING 4K players for $80, and TRUE UHD players costing well between $250 and $400. https://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3A4k%20bluray%20player

      Research bud, research.

    • Mark

I dont know James, I really think MS will drop it at 400-500 range, considering what Phil and Pennello is hinting at, “In the Xbox S 2TB model range”. They know they can’t launch this thing at 600 bones. But we’ll see bro. Also the S model has a 4K bluray and only costs 299, barely more expensive than thr base Xbox. So I don’t know

  • LDS

How long has it been since Pachter actually came up with the real fact? Feels like the first time lol

    • Mark

Haha. This guy said “Those people still playing PS1 in Europe”….uhh what? C’mon bra get a grip.

    • Triton

Pachter thinks EU consist of 3rd world countries lol.
I wonder when he will realize we have much higher standards than the US.

    • LDS

Bra, he meant PS has fan base built up since the PS1 time era lol

    • Mark

And I quote, “If you are up in France, or Italy, or Spain, or Germany, PLAYING a PS1, then you love the PlayStation brand”. Present tense bra

  • LifeOnMars

North American is the only region the Xbox one has a chance of winning this Christmas and that is in doubt with the release of Ps4 pro. After that it will be poor year until Scorpio is released, lets hope is worth that long wait. I’m afraid that Sony will put a dampener on the release by adding 4k blu ray play back and a price cut to the Ps4 Pro, and may play the Microsoft game by anouncing the PS 5 in 15 months in the future.

    • Triton

If PSVR flops and PS4 Pro doesnt sell very good they wont have money to develop a proper PS5. The research alone is in the billions.
Meanwhile MS can cough up that from their pocket change.

    • LifeOnMars

      No chance.
      Both will be hot sellers.
Development of PS5 is well underway.
I fear for microsoft, I hope it can survive as Playstation needs compertion as we all will benefit in the long run.

    • Reclaimer13

Not a chance and even if Sony does drop a new console MS will be right behind with another more powerful system. MS will not be behind again when it comes to power.

    • Mr Xrat

MS will be consistently behind with release and games.

    • bardock5151

Adding a 4K bluray player so soon after launch won’t go down well at all. Then if they decide to announce the PS5? Well that’s an even bigger kick in the guts to those who already bought the pro.

Neither idea will work for Sony.

    • LifeOnMars

Yes I remember when xbox 360 finaly got HDMI and built in WiFi.

    • bardock5151

      Completely different situations.
      1)Xbox 360 could do 1080p through component.
2)Xbox 360 could already use the internet either through a wired connection (which is much better) or an adapter.

    • LifeOnMars

Yes , I remember those wires ,external power brick ,Wifi add on,and the external HD dvd, stuck with a small hd drive.wired controler, controler charge kit, still thanks to Sony they have upped their game 3 years into this gen.

    • Mark

Yeah the Pro will win this holiday. However I don’t think the S will have “poor” sales tho. It’ll sell well

  • Hvd

why would it there ae ZERO AAA exclusives for the ps4.i have to many games right now to play and most of them are exclusives.psvr flopped,ps4 slim who would buy it if you have a ps4 and the ps4 pro how long are you going to wait for patches for pro mode…lmao

the xbox one s is better then the ps4 pro and its cheaper…lmao

    sony is a joke.,

    • Ucouldntbemorewrong

Oh Xbert…XB1s is better than Ps4 slim sure but not to the PS4 Pro, nope

    • Hvd

ok ponie you are going to wait for a patch for pro mode?thats how they pro will work THEY decide which games get a patch or not.what happens when you put your ps4 game in to the ps4 pro with out a patch its the same as the ps4.

thats bs to me and i would never buy that.when the sbox one s upscales ALL games to 4k not needing a patch…lol

    • crazy_black_man-

Hows that laggy and jittery Battlefield 1 menu working out on Xbox One? Have they fixed the online issues yet?

    • bxwhiterabbit

Dude you making a fool out of yourself lol.

    • Hvd

no moire then the rest of the ps4 community does..lol

    • crazy_black_man-

What? Make a fool out of you? True dat.

    • Triton

The bigger problem is we all have to wait longer for the releases because Sony dont make the games scalable, like Xbox One “Scorpio” games will be.

    • Hvd

pretty much.people dont realize the ps4 pro needs a patch or the games you get will be 1080p/30 just lkike the ps4.after a few years you will have a hand full of games with a pro patch but by that time the -s5 will be around the corner.

so is it worth $400 to wait for patches for the handfull of games or just wait for the ps5?

    • Ucouldntbemorewrong

All games are up-scaled to 4K on PS4 Pro just like XB1S. Released games going forward along with some older games but not all will be patched with more features added, such as native 4k, checkerboard rendering, frame rate, lighting etc, etc.
Typical Xbert not having the facts right…pathetic

    • James Fitzgerald

Their are pro patch releasing in two weeks. Devs have been working on Ps4 Pro patches for months now and some have been working on Ps4 Pro enabled Ps4 exclusive. Try doing research first before commenting.

    • Hvd

thats right not all games will get a pro patch.i even hope they charge for it for all that extra worrk.not all ps4 ames will get a pro patch..lol

    • James Fitzgerald

Oh also you were actually wrong abou sowething else Ps4 has more AAA exclusive that are better rated than Xbone and they can’t charge for the pro patch Sony has already made it clear the patches will be free. No not all Ps4 games will get a patch yeah you got me there, what you want a cookie? The XboneS is a decent buy but the fact is it will be back behind Ps4 once the Pro launches.

    • kma99

He is talking about first party exclusives. You must be new to these console wars

  • Coffee High

Gears special edition is sold out nearly everywhere today… Hope they ship more. Walmart, target and best buy are out of all Xbox one consoles as well. The Sony section is full though…

    • Mark

Ahaha. Dude Gears 4 is sick. I’ve been getting better online everyday. I love it man

  • Doo_Doo_Beans

meanwhile, south n!ggas still waiting on Sega Dreamcast to release

    • Mark

Lmao. I loved that dam system!

  • crazy_black_man-

Kas Hirai will make a fool out of the Phil Spencer for the another holiday season with strong PS4/PS4Pro/Psvr sales, and Phil will bow down as usual and shamelessly congratulate him. Pachter is just stating the obvious.

    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/dd3f0748680f74d2853d052f60a6b731c5ddce33235cbe3073a0f4a6e603f0da.gif .

    • Mark

      Lmao. Dayum

  • Gamez Rule

Sony has already won this gen when consumer sales are concerned, so IMO Xbone S will not make much difference even IF they sold more in the holiday season.

    • Mark

Agreed. But u know what I think Gamez? I feel Microsoft really just wants back the Western markets, so when the next consoles come out, these same people won’t be too in love wit Sony. Lmao

    • Gamez Rule

I thought that too, but I think they need to make an impact within their own homelands first. Must be a blow to them while PS4 was selling better in their territory than their own console.

  • Reclaimer13

Being an analysis you’d think that he’d know that the ps4 slim and the xbox one s are priced the same.. only difference is that one has a 4k bluray player, true hdr support, backward compatibility, ea access, superior online service and an optical out jack, while the other one doesn’t.

    • Evil_Annie_2015

He would know that if he was an actual gamer. He was probably making claims based on Gamingbolt’s information passed to him..:)

In fact, The author of this article should really interview Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton about their analysis of the Scorpio and PS Pro..hehe

  • Starman

    AAAAAAA ha ha ha ……………loooooooooooool !!!!!!!! funiest sh*t I heard all month…

  • Paul Insco

How is this douchenozzle still relevant to anything? Isn’t he just a financial analyst? Who cares what he has to say about gaming? Btw, financial analysts are basically the current day version of fortune tellers.

  • Mr Xrat

I see it. Unless they basically give it away like they did in 2014, it’s another bust.

  • Wontime

Idgaf about predictions. I’m also a pony
