xbox one scorpio

It looks like Microsoft is ensuring that the Scorpio is perceived as a major improvement over the existing Xbox One all around, without any existing games needing any patches, as has been the case on the PS4 Pro. According to a report on Windows Central, existing games that make use of dynamic scaling on Xbox One will achieve their target resolutions more frequently on Project Scorpio- in simple terms, this means that a game that uses dynamic resolutions should be able to hit, say, 1080p (if 1080p was a target resolution for it to begin with) more during gameplay on Scorpio, without any intervention needed on the developer’s part. Framerates will also automatically be more stable on Scorpio.

But that’s not all that the Scorpio will entail- apparently, the console comes with Shader Model 6 (SM6) and shader compiler improvements. SM6 is an API for creating shading, and should bump up efficiency across the board, saving developers time and system resources. It also sounds like this will be made available for standard Xbox One consoles too, in addition to Scorpio, naturally.

It also sounds like games that sport 4K assets will enjoy graphics enhancements on 1080p displays, which will come down to the console’s supersampling technology. All of this is to say that even with a standard 1080p monitor, the difference between Scorpio and existing Xbox One systems should be clear on just about any game.

That said, Windows Central’s report does note that to get the full impact of what the Scorpio is, you will need a 4K TV enabled with HDR.  Unlike the PS4 Pro, the Scorpio will also come with a 4K Blu-ray player, with its image output achieved by HDMI 2.0a with Wide Color Gamut and HDR.

So all in all, it looks like Microsoft is really betting the house on this whole 4K resolution thing- let’s hope it works out for them. I’m hoping they will have some great games to go with their new console too.

lol xbox scorpio have 4k blu-ray player. Why does fans want it on xbox scorpio if they already have 4k blu-ray player at home ? i know PS4 Pro don’t have 4k blu-ray player but i don’t care because i don’t watch movies on my PS4 Pro

    • Troy Marcel

Wow what a lame excuse, 4k discs hold far more data, Sony screwed up not going 4k in the pro.

    • Holeybartender

Did it screw up Sony’s dominating PS4 sales releasing a 4k player in their Xbox S? Nope, because 4k is barely a blip on the radar. Sony has all the time in the world to release a full 4k console with the PS5 on the horizon when 4k comes to fruition.

    • Troy Marcel

4k attach rate is better than when blu ray first came out

    • LifeOnMars

I have purchased far fewer blurays than DVD,I think 4k bluray will sell
      less than std bluray

    • Jonathan Wallace

Same here, but I still want a console with that option. I like options, and so do consumers. Even though I don’t plan on buying a Sony Console in the near future, I still want Sony consumers to have the same perks in their system that I do. I would prefer both Sony and Microsoft to push each other to innovate and drive costs down to the greatest possible extent, as it benefits ALL console owners.

    • LifeOnMars

If 4k bluray does not flop the PS5 will include that option.

    • Jonathan Wallace

Hopefully that is true, but we are talking about current and announced consoles here, and about the lack of features that some are coming out with, despite the obvious industry trend. Many of us just think it was so sad that Sony played it so safe with the PS4 Pro, but it makes sense that they have less pressure to innovate when they are so far in the lead.

    • LifeOnMars

I think 4k BluRay needs Playstation to succeed just like BluRay needed Playstation.

    • Holeybartender

And when Sony releases a new generation console, not just an upgrade that will be the case. But now,nah not so much.

    • Riggybro

      Who buys discs these days?

      They are annoying.
      Digital all the way.

    • Troy Marcel

Just because you don’t doesn’t mean a thing

    • Riggybro

Just because you do doesn’t mean a thing.

    • Holeybartender

It sure does mean something, have you tried to play a digital game without the Internet, backwards compatibility excluded? The license to the game is not included in the game and locks you out of your own games when your Internet’s out. Discs you have unlimited access to them. Sure digital is convenient and you can predownload it before release but you truly don’t own your games and to normal consumers that will always outweigh digital.

    • Holeybartender

Because Blu-ray had HD DVD to compete with. The funny thing is that was another console war failure by Microsoft that Sony destroyed them on.

    • Jonathan Wallace

They screwed up, not in the sense that their biggest competitor will now catch up to them (they won’t), but in the sense that they screwed up for their customers, who as a whole, would have been better served if they would have included the 4K Blu-Ray player.

Not everything has to be about #MuhConsoleWarzzzz

    • C. Hoffer

*cough* – So what, you will not be getting a ‘4k’ data disc. Last time I looked movies playing does not imply data disc (in terms of formats used).

    • Mr Xrat

      Xgimp in clueless shocker.

    • Joe Cool

      Post of the year

    • Luke Skywalker

Your anecdotal reasoning doesn’t translate to everyone. Not because you don’t care doesn’t mean no one else should. You might not watch movies on your ps4pro but others watch movies on their One S and would want to watch movies in their Scorpio too, there might even be a lot of ps4 and ps4pro users who would’ve loved to have a 4k Blu-ray player in their consoles.

    • Holeybartender

For decades now it’s been proven that gamers don’t necessarily care about watching movies when considering buying a console. Yes,the PS3 having a Blu-ray drive did boost the appeal of the console being the cheapest player for non-gaming households but the 4k player is a whole different situation. Blu-ray was in competition as a replacement of DVDs unlike 4k Blu-rays where it’s far from replacing the current medium just yet. Having a 4k Blu-ray player in the XB S or Scorpio doesn’t have that selling factor that PlayStation had at that time. Once 4k Blu-ray gets to the point where it will replace Blu-ray as the current medium then it will be a big driving factor for console sales.

    • Psionicinversion

Its a good alternative seeing as 4K bluray players cost like £400. thats why 4K bluray hasnt take off, the players cost to much

    • C. Hoffer

The players are overpriced AND the discs. :/

    • Jonathan Wallace

In case you didn’t already know, you just proved his point. Luke never stated that this is identical to the PS3 Blu-Ray player situation. He simply stated that having a 4K Blu-Ray player in the system is a selling point, at least to some people.

    • Holeybartender

I wasn’t trying to discredit his point, just putting out how less of a selling point it is with the state of the current 4k medium as it sits.

    • Mark

I actually agree with u, good point. But I also gotta say that watching a 4K movie on bluray, not streaming it, is amazing. Again I agree with u on the selling point, but the 4K bluray will be a great feature for those who’ve got the bread to utilize it

    • Mark

Existing Xbox One S fans are likely to trade in their system for the Scorpio. It would be an absolute fail for them to release a more advanced console without a feature the weaker one has lmao

    • C. Hoffer

for me…it won’t be ‘a likely trade’..it will be a run to the store and chuck it towards the exchange dept like the POS it is as soon as I’m within throwing distance. lol

  • Holeybartender

Microsoft is beefing the Scorpio up as a next gen console not just an upgraded Xbox One meant to encompass this generation only.I doubt well see another Xbox from them for 6 or more years to come after Scorpio.

    • Mark

Phil did already mention last year that Microsoft’s thinking about the next Xbox already. 6Tflops ain’t all that much to hold onto for 6 yrs

    • Holeybartender

Yeah but they could very easily just upgrade the Scorpio when the time comes.Phil also said they see the future of consoles being upgraded every 2-3 years instead of releasing a generational console.

    • Mark

I remember seeing Phil say “We don’t know yet what the next Xbox is yet, in terms of design”. That’s a giveaway to me, but who knows, maybe ur right! Lol

    • Tactical Lag-fighting tips

How much of that 6TF is reserved for Kinect 3?

  • Davey681

So here is what I see with Scorpio vs PS4 “pro”
Native 4k vs 720p boooost and an upscaling gimmick
Back compat vs no back compat
Game downloading vs PSnow streaming robbery
1080p TV supersampling and shader upgrade vs nothing
    4k blu ray vs nothing
coop and multiplayer gems vs single player hack n slash bores with no replay value after beating.
    Scorpio for me

    • LifeOnMars

      What i see is.
Horizon Zero Dawn show the quality of games that the PS4/PS4 Pro is capable of, Playstation has nothing to fear from Microsoft and will continue to be the best selling console untill PS5 is launched (late 2019 at the earliest) it will be $400 or less and be at least 10 teraflops with true 4k gaming.
4k bluray is currently over priced and poorly supported.
If 4k bluray does take off then sony may well include it in the PS5.
Not all of Scorpio games will be native 4k and may have a version of checkerboard rendering .
Games should be the main reason for buying a console, hasn’t microsoft learned anything over the last three years.

    • Davey681

Horizon zero dawn is another single player hack n slash game that’s worthless after beating in 20 hours.
Microsoft has nothing to fear from Sony…Sony is a console only platform where MS has the largest PC operating system in the world to yet develop. Sony wrote off $1 billion last quarter so they have plenty to fear. 4k bluray is the highest fidelity method of watching content, you hate cause you don’t have. MS would be morons to force devs to make all native 4k games but it certainly has the power to do so. I assure you Scorpio will not be putting out 720p games like Nioh just to hold 60fps.

    • LifeOnMars

It’s obvious to me that you have not played or even seen HZD running on a PS4 or PS5 .
I use Windows because I have to use Microsoft software not for the love of Xbox.

    • Davey681

Yes played horizon zero dawn…looks as good as Forza horizon 3. But I have have 300 hours in Forza Horizon 3 whereas HZD is a one and done at 30 hours max. I use windows because it’s a fine product well supported and most widely accepted OS in the world. And MS is always more than helpful if I have questions….and ???

    • LifeOnMars

Let’s just see how the next 12 months pan out. I personally think Xbox will be in trouble.

    • Davey681

Ime not seeing a thing. 2 scorpios for my household on day 1.. Xbox one has outpaced Xbox 360. You fruitloops hoping they will be in trouble are Fing mental cases. The only thing in trouble is Sony writing off $1 billion last quarter.

    • LifeOnMars

A fool and his money are soon parted.

    • Davey681

A pony peasant settling for inferior products because he has mental issues.

    • LifeOnMars

I suggested that you sell it as quickly as posible, you will get a very good price as they are hard to find in the UK Sony are having trouble keeping up with demand.

    • Psionicinversion

hahaha i doubt it. PS4 Pro isnt selling anywhere close to there expectations

    • LifeOnMars

The joke is on you, Sony are having trouble keeping up demand.Microsoft will have a cruel long wait for their so called Savior machine the Scorpio.I hope during that wait they can get some decent games ready for release, not just another incarnation of Forza or Gear of War. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/b42ed47a7744762425904e8399bef43ad30f99b0d539b75e1383ccdfe7628007.png

    • Psionicinversion

lol whatever i can buy one from amazon, tesco, argos right now… yeah guess there really having trouble keeping up with demand hahahaha

    • LifeOnMars

Next to the unsold pile of original Xbox One’s gathering dust.

    • Psionicinversion

Haha deflecting classic sign of a troll when he’s lost his argument

    • LifeOnMars

Xbox one is a failure, it has no AAA games it runs mult platform games at at a lower framerate and resolution. and has been out sold by PS4 by a factor of 2:1.

    • Psionicinversion

You think I care lmao. That’s cute

    • LifeOnMars

      It’s sad

    • Psionicinversion

      yeah you are!

    • Jonathan Wallace

Both the Xbox One and the PS4 are success stories. Sony was just MORE of a success. Please stop with the console war and fanboy garbage, it is so annoying.

    • C. Hoffer

      sigh…
Saw the xbox=netflix…so true….and laughing coffee out the nose hurts.

    • Tactical Lag-fighting tips

They wanted TV features put first, least they’re in 1080p

    • Riggybro

I use Windows because I am forced to.

Have you ever played the board game monopoly? It may be a good starting point in your understanding of the history of Microsoft.

    • Davey681

      Liar….get a Mac.
F your conspiracy theories boy. I know Microsofts history. And I know Sony’s. Don’t like Sony, don’t trust em. PSnow is a Fing embarrassment and the PS4 “pro” not far behind it.

    • Mark

Eww, u got Riggybro on that one ahaha

    • LifeOnMars

Of course you have played it for 300 hours it’s the only game that Xbox has.

    • Davey681

Ummm no you are looking desperate now. Either way it’s got more replay in then almost the entire PS4 library.

    • LifeOnMars

Bravo bravo you are such a wag.

    • C. Hoffer

umm… ‘ cuse cars in circles will always have tons of replay…snicker….hahaha
I equate that stuff to a dog chasing its tail until tired then repeating…

    • Holeybartender

      Because it’s a racing game.

    • Holeybartender

One’s a racing game,of course he’s going to play it more than the other.

    • Holeybartender

You’re basically playing HZD 100 times over if your comparing a racing game vs an action/adventure game. Why can’t people like you get past the exclusive aspect of a game and realize they are completely different games requiring different levels of gameplay and hours to play them?

    • Mr Xrat

Shush, you’ll make the retarded woodpecker cry.

    • LifeOnMars

      You, can’t handle the truth.

    • Jonathan Wallace

Yes, Scorpio is without a better machine (by the specs) just like the PS4 was better than the Xbox One (by the specs). The rest is all preference. Let’s try not to always start fights that don’t matter at all.

    • Davey681

It’s just my opinion. Lordy people are sensitive these days.

    • Jonathan Wallace

I’m with you, the annoying fanboyism that started from your comment is what I’m talking about.

    • C. Hoffer

You sound like you have no idea what you are talking about and just tossing things down. Strangely, a lot of what you toss as PS4 trash talk sounds more like the Xbox One (original & S).lol

  • Rikarudo

I don’t see why everyone is comparing to the PS4 pro.
Don’t we all know by now that it’s Xbox one vs PS4, Xbox one S vs PS4 pro, and then Scorpio vs unannounced playstation console…

    • Psionicinversion

      X1 S vs the pro lmao whatever. X1 S vs PS4 slim.

    • Rikarudo

It’s called Xbox one S and PS4 pro. That’s their names. Simple. But I guess you believe ve Microsoft are going to sell actual scorpions or scorpios.

    • Psionicinversion

Xbox One S(lim) dummy. PS4 Slim or have you conveniently forgot about that one/?

    • Learned Handgun

he’s either a troll or an idiot. move on

    • Psionicinversion

bit of both i reckon 😀

    • Rikarudo

Have you forgotten what the difference is between PS4 and the PS4 slim?

    • Jonathan Wallace

PS4 Slim is the PS4 in a smaller package. The Xbox One S is an Xbox One is a smaller package (plus HDR capabilities, 4K streaming, and very very minor performance boost to gaming).

PS4 Pro has consistent and highly discernible performance boost over the PS4 (unlike the Slim or One S), and the Scorpio will have consistent and highly discernible performance boost over the Xbox One, One S, PS4 (and PS4 Slim obviously), and PS4 Pro.

So ultimately (and obviously) Scorpio is going to directly compete with the PS4 Pro. I highly doubt Sony is going to release ANOTHER new console in time to better compete with Scorpio. That would be bad for business and hurt their bottom line (IMO).

    • Rikarudo

Exactly, no difference between the ps4 and slim. So that’s why the original post stands.

    • Learned Handgun

if there is exactly no difference, why are they labeled differently?

    • Jonathan Wallace

No, you are missing the point entirely. Your original post ignored the PS4 Slim, and claimed that the One S was meant to compete with the PS4 Pro, which simply isn’t true. The One S (like the PS4 Slim) was not meant to have better gaming performance, thus your original post fails, and the following is what the actual competition is, broken down by product.

Xbox One VS PS4 (OG Consoles for this cycle)

Xbox One S VS PS4 Slim (Slimmed down versions of each)

Xbox One Scorpio VS PS4 Pro (Suped up versions of each)

    • Luke Skywalker

I should’ve scrolled down some more. I pretty much have the wrote the same thing above

    • Psionicinversion

Yeah slim is on 16nm and uses polaris. X1s is on 14 or 16nm uses polaris and has a 4k bluray in. That’s the difference. In terms of power there identical pretty much

    • Rikarudo

Well isn’t that what everyone is comparing?

    • Psionicinversion

no, you cant compare a product that has had a power upgrade to one that hasnt also the difference in price is the other thing to. x1s and slim are about the same price if not identical. scorpio is compared to pro, then ps5 will be out in 2019 most likely then one after scorpio probably 2020

    • Rikarudo

so you know the price of the scorpio then?

    • Psionicinversion

i think scorpio will be $500-550. but then you cant cry about the price being to much then. if your willing to compare say the X1 S to the pro with its +$100 launch price and zero power upgrade on the S, then you can compare the scorpio to the Pro. Even though you wont like to do that.

Fact is currently you cant compare the pro to anything. It stands on its own. Its only fanboys that compare the Pro to One S to make themselves feel better about themselves.

    • Tomaterrrx

No Xbox One S isn’t rivaling PS4 pro. The pro is a mid gen upgrade while the XB1 S is just what the name implies (with a few upgrades), just like the PS4 S. Scorpio is a mid gen upgrade, not a new gen so it should be compared to the Pro.

    • Rikarudo

First of comparing and rivaling are two different things. But basically you are saying, because Xbox doesn’t have a midrange upgrade yet, then before it even releases, it should be compared to the PS4 pro, not taking into account, that it just means, we are just comparing the newest release from one company to the last from the other. Same way when the Xbox 360 launched a year earlier, we would not be saying let’s compare it to the ps3, but the ps2.

    • Tomaterrrx

When the 360 launched I would’ve compared it to any other console in the same gen (i.e: PS3). I’m not gonna try to over-complicate things I just believe that a mid gen upgrade should be compared to another mid range upgrade. The XB1 S isn’t even that much of an upgrade. It just depends on how you use the console. It’s pretty much just a smaller Xbox with a few more bells and whistles.

    • Rikarudo

      exactly,
but people still compare the bells and whistles.
and like you said, over complicating things, that is the reason of my original post. ps4 pro. should not be compared to anything right now except the xbox one S. and in one year, when the scorpio releases, then sure, we can start but keep in mind that sony, will release another one. so every comment comparing scorpio to the ps4 pro, is just stupid.

    • Tomaterrrx

I just don’t think it is fair to compare the XB1 S to what is suppossed to be a sizable leap in technology. It just makes more sense to compare the ‘S’ model of one company to the ‘S’ model of another. Right now, well the Pro doesn’t have any competitors in the console market. Once the Scorpio comes it’ll fill that market gap.

I appreciate you not being an utter dumb*** here. Some people in these threads go all out but it’s nice to have a somewhat intelligent discussion with someone

    • Luke Skywalker

I don’t remember anyone comparing the xbox 360 and the ps2 in that way, we were all comparing the ps2 vs OG xbox and when the xbox 360 launched we were all waiting for the ps3 to compare it to.

this is how the comparison goes:
Xbox One vs PS4 (original release)
Xbox One S vs PS4 slim (slimmed version with same GPU)
Xbox One Scorpio vs PS4 Pro (upgraded version with different GPU)

this is how you see the it:
Xbox One vs PS4 (original release)
      ————–vs PS4 slim (slimmed version)
Xbox One S vs PS4 Pro (slimmed version with original GPU vs new version with different GPU)
Xbox One Scorpio vs ———– (new version with different GPU)

do you notice that the way you look at it is miss matched? hope this clarifies something for you.

    • Rikarudo

yeah i see it. xbox one s with upgrade, compared to a ps4 slimwith no upgrade,
and then, non released console to a released console with upgrade.

exactly. see that last row. thats why im saying it.
Xbox One Scorpio vs ———– (new version with different GPU)

and if you actually foresaw and understood how i saw it then u get it. so, have a great weekend =)

    • Luke Skywalker

Yeah I see that you’re looking at it all miss matched. You’re trying to say a 6% upclock on the same GPU as its base (done to support HDR feature on newer TVs) is in comparison with a GPU that has a new architecture and is 2x more powerful than its base.

      Base to base
      Slim to slim
      New to New.
      That’s how I see it.

Yeah you have a great weekend too

    • Rikarudo

Oh I never said gpu and stuff. Where did I say that?
      Same man =)

  • Mr Plinkus

The Scorpio can have all this tech , but for me it all comes down to the price. In the U.K any console that has been sold at £400 or more has always had a hard time selling. The PS3 was £420 at launch , it didn’t sell well , the Xbox One was £425 at launch and it didn’t sell well. If the Scorpio is £400 or more it will flop.
Maybe Microsoft will take a hit on each unit and sell it at a loss , Then try and make the cash back with software sales but that’s a very risky strategy .

  • Mr Xrat

LOL the big exclusives the Xgimps at Windows Central were pimping for a week was stuff we already knew. Shows just how desperate Xgimps are for any crumb of comfort.

    • kma99

Hate Microsoft yet sits on a pro Microsoft site looking for news. Lol stupid drone.

    • Davey681

You forgot to mention his multiple accounts and self up voting insanity.

    • stillwaitingforgreatness

      Drone drone.

  • Jay Hy

We gon c cuz Now Sony say we da Best??Sony bet patch da 4k blu n da System thinkn Digital is It n its NOT?? Most folk like me stil like goin out buyn games not set hme n draws jus Dwnloadn Aw day

  • Davey681

Wow….so here is what I am seeing between what the Scorpio will offer me vs the PS4 “pro”…..
Native 4k vs 720p and an upscaling gimmick
Back compat vs no back compat
Game downloading service vs PSnow streaming robbery
1080p TV supersampling and shader upgrade vs nothing
    4k blu ray vs nothing
Coop and multiplayer gems vs 3rd person single player hack n slash bores.
Sony really needs to step up their game. More Single player 3rd person single player hack n slash games with no replay value, some as low as 720p just ain’t gonna cut it.
