CASTLEVANIA

In the pantheon of the greatest video game franchises of all time, Castlevania surely sits on the high table. That is a position that it will never lose, no matter what. But this is a series that, sadly enough, just hasn’t been able to remain quite as relevant as time has gone on. Order of Ecclesia on the DS was the last truly great Castlevania game, after which Konami decided to focus their energies on finally making a successful transition to 3D for the franchise. That led to Lords of Shadow, which was a decent enough game with some great ideas, but wasn’t really what Castlevania has always been about. Its sequel, Lords of Shadow 2, was a big disappointment, and seemed to have completely lost sight of the series’ true identity as it tried (and failed) to mimic the success of God of War. Unless Konami can bring the franchise back to its roots, and do it well, perhaps it’s best that they just not do anything with it at all- and looking at the way Konami now operates, the latter seems very likely.
