7. Elite

The 1984 classic that arguably started the open world genre, Elite sees you trading goods and upping your starship combat rating in a massive open star system. It may look pretty ropey by today's standards, but Elite is a rewarding and incredibly long lasting slice of gaming history. It won't be easy tracking down an original BBC Micro or Acorn version of the game, but there were a tonne of ports to other popular systems, and I hear there are various other means of acquiring such games that Google knows about. Wink wink, nudge nudge.
