GTA 6’s Weather Can Affect Sailing, Damage Aircraft, and Cause Pedestrians to Seek Shelter

Compared to Grand Theft Auto 5's presets, Rockstar's Aaron Garbut describes the sequel's weather as "much more granular."

When we last heard about Grand Theft Auto 6’s weather systems, including rain, moving storms and whatnot, we questioned how they would interact with the larger world. Rockstar has focused on more granular systems in its latest open-world magnum opus, and sure enough, the weather can affect the environment, your vehicles and more.

“Generally speaking, it’s either rainy or sunny or whatever,” co-studio head Aaron Garbut told Edge Magazine (via GamesRadar) about Grand Theft Auto 5’s weather. “This game is much more granular.”

So while you might be sunbathing in one place, a storm may be spotted off in the distance. Not your problem, right? Start closing the distance, and it will be, and the environment morphs accordingly.

If you’re in an area with people, changing weather will cause them to scatter. Garbut notes that wind can affect not just trees but the clouds and the ocean’s waves. The publication also describes how “islands and buildings can shelter stretches of water,” adding another wrinkle to sailing.

“Depending on where you are in your boat, you’ll skip over that stuff or get really rocked around by it.” And yes, flying into a storm causes turbulence, and even “light damage” if you hang around too long. “Everything comes down to these granular levels, and then it just interacts,” says Garbut.

We’re still keen to see how this affects fleeing from the police. Because surely Vice City’s finest wouldn’t pursue you into a storm, right? The real question is whether you can survive flying into a hurricane. With Grand Theft Auto 6 launching on November 19th after years of delays, you can bet someone will try it.
